history

Early Years (1924 to 1986)

Sports enthusiasts young men founded SC Verl on September 6, 1924. The first venue was the Auf der Heide sports field . In 1928 he was promoted to the 1st district class . The club attracted more and more spectators, so that the venue had to be relocated to the Ölbach . The club won its first title in 1931, when the SCV Gau Cup winner in the Wiedenbrück district . A year later, she was promoted to the 2nd district class. During the season, the team remained without losing points.

After the end of World War II , the losers initially played predominantly in the district class. In 1947 he was promoted to the district class, which was followed a year later by relegation as penultimate in the table. In the following years the association pushed the youth work. In 1960, the first team rose again to the district class. Ten years later he was promoted to the then fourth-class Landesliga Westfalen .

Stadium on Poststrasse

In 1971 Wolfgang Beckhoff took over the management of the club and converted SC Verl into an ambitious club. In terms of sport, the team quickly established itself in the regional league and always occupied positions in the top half of the table. In the 1972/73 season, the Verler were only two points behind champions SC Herford third. A year later they finished third again, but this time with a clear 20 points behind Bünder SV . In 1978 SC Verl was runner-up in its regional league team behind BV Bad Lippspringe under coach Georg Stürz . With the introduction of the Oberliga Westfalen there was an increased promotion, so that the SC Verl rose to the fourth class Association League Westphalia .

In the 1979/80 season the SC took part in the DFB Cup competition for the first time. In the first round, the team caused a surprise with a 2-1 win at the upper division VfB Oldenburg . It was followed by a 3-1 victory over SV Elversberg . The end came in the third round with a 7-1 home defeat against the second division side Stuttgarter Kickers , in which the later national player Karl Allgöwer scored four goals alone.

In the Association League Westphalia, the SC Verl always achieved placements in the upper half of the table. In 1981 the team was runner-up, two points behind Eintracht Heessen . A year later the Verler finished eighth, the worst placement in the league era. For the 1984/85 season Fritz Grösche took over the coaching position and led his team to the runner-up again. This time the losers were missing a point on the champions 1. FC Recklinghausen . A year later the SC Verl was four points ahead of the Bünder SV champions and rose to the then third-class Oberliga Westfalen.

Oberliga Westfalen (1986 to 1994)

The Verler team, known as the "village elf", was able to establish itself in the top league straight away. She reached ninth place in the 1986/87 season . For the first time, the club met local rivals FC Gütersloh . Both teams were able to win their respective away games. In the following season 1987/88, however, the Verler had to fear for a long time about relegation. On the last day of the match, the team, trained by Günther Rybarczyk , was able to secure relegation with a 4-1 win at Rot-Weiß Lüdenscheid . The SC Verl showed against the same point amateurs of VfL Bochum a goal difference six goals better .

From 1988 the SC Verl never got into relegation difficulties in the league. After the end of the 1989/90 season , the SC was the sporting number one in the Gütersloh district for the first time, as FC Gütersloh had to relegate to the club league as the penultimate. The following season 1990/91 brought the first high point in the club's history with the championship of the Oberliga Westfalen. The losers trained by Fritz Grösche finished the season one point ahead of ASC Schöppingen and two points on VfR Sölde . On the last day of the match, the Verler secured the title with a goal in the last minute at DSC Wanne-Eickel .

As champions of the Oberliga Westfalen, the losers reached the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga, where they played on VfL Wolfsburg , 1. SC Göttingen 05 (champions or runners-up in Oberliga Nord ), FC Remscheid (champions of Oberliga Nordrhein ) and Tennis Borussia Berlin (champions of the Oberliga Berlin ) met. Since the home stadium on Poststrasse was not suitable for the promotion round, SC Verl played its home games in Gütersloh's Heidewaldstadion . The losers started with a draw against Göttingen and a win in Berlin. This was followed by two defeats against Wolfsburg and in Remscheid. After two victories in Göttingen and against Berlin, there was once more hope for promotion, but this was dashed by a 2-3 defeat in Wolfsburg. On the last day of the match, the Verler achieved a 3: 3 against newly promoted FC Remscheid and took fourth place.

Bernard Dietz

In the 1991/92 season , the Verler could not defend the title and missed the runner-up due to the worse goal difference behind VfR Sölde. With a 2-1 final victory over SpVg Beckum , SC Verl won the Westphalia Cup for the first time in 1992 and qualified for the 1992/93 DFB Cup . After a bye in the first round, the losers were defeated by the fifth division team Sportfreunde Ricklingen 4-5 after extra time . In the major league season 1992/93 , the team trained by ex-national player Bernard Dietz was more successful. She was runner-up with five points behind Preußen Münster . This was the first time that SC Verl qualified for the German Amateur Championship . After three narrow defeats against 1. FC Bocholt (1: 2), Halleschen FC (1: 2) and BSV Brandenburg (0: 1), the losers lost 5-0 to the amateurs of Werder Bremen on the last match day . Without winning any points, SC Verl was last in the northern group.

For the 1994/95 season, the DFB introduced the regional league as the third division . In order to qualify for this league, the teams of the Oberliga Westfalen had to be at least sixth in the 1993/94 season . SC Verl strengthened itself with numerous regional players, including Dirk Otten , Gerrit Meinke and Andreas Golombek, three former Arminia Bielefeld players . Nevertheless, the team of coach Dieter Brei had to tremble for a long time about the qualification, which was finally achieved in fifth.

The first regional league era (1994 to 2003)

After a 4-1 victory over VfB Wissen , SC Verl was the first table leader in the Regionalliga West / Südwest . During the 1994/95 season , the losers were at the top of the table on a total of seven match days. A highlight of the season was the away game at Rot-Weiss Essen in front of 18,000 spectators, in which Essen secured the autumn championship with a 2-0 win . On the last day of the match, the Verler secured the runner-up behind Arminia Bielefeld with a 5-2 win over Essen. The losers had the goal difference by five goals better than the tied FSV Salmrohr . The Verler qualified again for the German Amateur Championship . But as in 1993, they had no chance. They lost the semi-final first leg at the Stuttgarter Kickers with 1: 8, but reached a 3: 3 draw in the second leg.

After an average 1995/96 season , the Verler team got off to a strong start a year later and took first place in the table four times. A series of seven games without a win let the team slip to seventh place. There followed two lean years in the middle of the table. In 1999 the team reached the final of the Westphalia Cup again and beat SC Paderborn 07 2-1. In the DFB-Pokal 1999/2000 the losers caused a surprise in the first round. They beat Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach 6: 5 on penalties . After Markus Reiter from Gladbach failed, Arne Friedrich converted the decisive penalty in his first game in Verl's first team. In the second round the Verler were eliminated by a 4-0 defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt .

Data on the DFB Cup game against Mönchengladbach in 1999

The 1999/2000 regional league season was dominated by qualifying for the two-track regional league. To qualify, you had to reach at least eleventh place. During most of the season, SC Verl, trained by Ulrich Sude , was below eleventh place. Dieter Brei returned in March 2000 and led the SCV with four wins in a row at the end of the season to eleventh place, which was secured on the penultimate game day with a 3-0 victory over FK Pirmasens . Dieter Hecking then took over the team, but was released in January 2001 despite his sporting success. His successor Jörg Weber led the team in the 2000/01 season in sixth place.

Then the Verler slipped into the middle of the table, before finally relegated to the league in 2003 after 17 years of membership in the third-highest division. In October 2002 the club separated from the coach Jörg Weber and brought Dieter Brei back. This in turn had to resign in March 2003. Manfred Niehaus, Tino Milde and Andreas Ortkemper took on responsibility as interim trainers. A 2-1 win at SC Paderborn 07 on the last matchday was not enough, as the immediate rival Hamburger SV Amateure won 4-2 at KFC Uerdingen 05 .

Senior league years and return to the regional league (2003 to 2012)

The direct return to the regional league was missed under the new coach Andreas Fischer . Despite a 4-0 win over SV Lippstadt 08 on the last match day, the Verler were only runner-up behind Arminia Bielefeld II , who beat FC Eintracht Rheine 8-0 at the same time and could not be denied the title. During the 2005/06 season , Mario Ermisch led SC Verl for months at the top of the table before the team stumbled through a series of four games without a win. Finally, the Verler were runner-up again behind Borussia Dortmund II . A year later , the SCV took over the table lead at the beginning of the second half of the season and did not give it up. At the end of the season, SC Verl was 13 points ahead of Schalke 04 II and returned to the Regionalliga.

In addition, the team defeated the regional league club Rot Weiss Ahlen 4: 2 in the final of the Westphalia Cup, winning the trophy for the third time. In the first round of the 2007/08 DFB Cup, the Verler were eliminated 3-0 against TSV 1860 Munich . In the 2007/08 regional league season , SC Verl faced a difficult season. In order to qualify for the third division , which was newly established after the season , the tenth place was required. A weak second half of the season let the team slip to the penultimate place, so that the Verler remained in the now three-pronged Regionalliga.

In the context of the soccer betting scandal in 2009 , two games of SC Verl from the 2008/09 season came under suspicion of manipulation . The two midfielders Patrick Neumann and Tim Hagedorn are said to have received at least 20,000 euros for deliberately losing the sportingly meaningless games against the amateur teams of 1. FC Köln and Borussia Mönchengladbach . Neumann and Hagedorn were then suspended from the association and their contracts subsequently dissolved.

In terms of sport, the Verler, trained by Raimund Bertels since 2009, achieved final placements in the midfield of the Regionalliga West in the following years. In 2010 the team reached the final of the Westphalia Cup for the fourth time, but lost the game against Preußen Münster with 1: 4. Despite the defeat, SC Verl qualified again for the DFB Cup and lost their first round match against TSV 1860 Munich with 1: 2. In December 2013, the club made headlines nationwide by signing ex-national player David Odonkor as assistant coach .

Path to professional football (since 2012)

In summer 2012, the regional leagues in Germany were reorganized and the three-track league became a five-track league. In terms of sport, the Verler didn't get beyond mediocrity. In the summer of 2013, Andreas Golombek took over the coaching position on Poststrasse. In 2015, the Verler reached the final of the Westphalia Cup after a surprising 2-1 semi-final victory over Arminia Bielefeld. However, they were defeated in their own stadium after a goalless 120 minutes to Lotte 3: 4 on penalties.

During the 2016/17 season , the losers were in danger of relegation. Andreas Golombeck was released as a coach in April 2017 and replaced by Guerino Capretti, who previously worked as a player- coach at Delbrücker SC . The class could be held under Capretti. Curiously, Capretti continued to play for Delbrück until the end of the season, before he concentrated on his coaching job in Verl from the 2017/18 season . In the following years the losers slowly worked their way up.

In the 2019/20 DFB Cup , SC Verl became a surprise team. Initially, the team won 2-1 in round one against FC Augsburg , before SCV prevailed 8-7 on penalties in round two (1-1 afterwards) against Holstein Kiel . For the first time, the Verler qualified for the cup round of 16, which was lost against 1. FC Union Berlin by a late goal 0: 1. Since SV Rödinghausen did not apply for a license for the 3rd league, SC Verl took part in the promotion games as runners-up in the Regionalliga West 2019/20 . Here Verl prevailed with a 2: 2 in the away game and 1: 1 in the home game against 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig and thus rose to the third division for the first time. Because of the Corona outbreak at the Tönnies company in Rheda-Wiedenbrück , the Verler had to play their home game in the Bielefeld SchücoArena .

Former players

Arne Friedrich
Heinrich Schmidtgal

The most famous former SC Verl player is Arne Friedrich . The defender came from the youth team of FC Gütersloh in 1999 and immediately became a regular. After one season he became a professional at Arminia Bielefeld and in 2002 moved to Hertha BSC , where he became a national player. In the 2008/09 season, SC Verl provided Etienne Barbara, a Maltese international . Between 2008 and 2010 he provided Ihsan Kalkan, a Turkish U-21 international ; the former seller Heinrich Schmidtgal played fourteen times for Kazakhstan between 2010 and 2015 .

In addition, the SC Verl produced numerous later Bundesliga and second division players over the years. The striker Angelo Vier was after his first time in Verl twice top scorer in the 2. Bundesliga .

Former trainers

Dieter Hecking
Heribert Bruchhagen

Since 1967 SC Verl has employed 24 trainers, not including interim trainers . Four coaches experienced more than one term at Poststrasse. Gero Timmer, Dieter Brei and Fritz Grösche each coached SC Verl three times. At four and a half years, Mario Ermisch achieved the longest term of office of all Verler coaches. Between 1980 and 1984 Manfred Niehaus was a trainer for four years, while Raimund Bartels missed a four-year term for a month. The shortest terms of office - again without taking the interim trainers into account - are shared by Heinz Knüwe , Wolfgang Knaupe, Dieter Brei and Reinhard Schröter, all of whom were only in office for four months.

In 1986 Fritz Grösche was promoted to the Oberliga Westfalen. The Oberliga championship in 1991 was won under coach Reinhard Schröter. When the Verler became runner-up in the 1994/95 regional league season, the coach was Dieter Brei. The team reached the second championship in the Oberliga Westfalen in 2007 under Mario Ermisch. The Westphalia Cup victories in 1999 and 2007 were won under Fritz Grösche and Mario Ermisch. The rise in the 3rd division succeeded under the coach Guerino Capretti.

Some Verler coaches have had successful careers as players. Bernard Dietz played 53 times for the German national team and was captain of the European championship team from 1980 . Dieter Brei was once in the German B selection. Andreas Fischer , Gerd Roggensack , Ulrich Sude and Jörg Weber were Bundesliga players when they were active, while Heribert Bruchhagen , Andreas Golombek and Dieter Hecking played in the 2nd Bundesliga.

After their time as coach at SC Verl, some personalities were able to make careers elsewhere. Heribert Bruchhagen is now a board member of the German Football League and was chairman of the board of Hamburger SV until March 8, 2018 . Dieter Hecking coached the Bundesliga clubs 1. FC Nürnberg , VfL Wolfsburg and Borussia Mönchengladbach .

Stadion

The SC Verl played on various courts before moving to the sports field on Poststrasse in 1955 . The games of the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga in 1991 took place in Gütersloh Heidewaldstadion. The sports field on Poststrasse was expanded into a stadium in 1994 and has a capacity of 5,001 seats. Another renovation took place in 2016; all standing room was roofed over, a floodlight system was installed and a VIP area was added, which increased the total capacity to 5,153 seats. Since this renovation, the stadium has been called Sportclub Arena .

Since the Sportclub Arena does not meet the requirements of the 3rd division, especially with regard to capacity, SC Verl will play its home games in the Benteler Arena in Paderborn, around 30 kilometers away, for the time being.

More teams

In addition to the regional league team, SC Verl provides two other men's teams, 24 youth teams, including three girls' teams and one senior team . In the 2019/20 season, the second men's team plays in the seventh-class regional league and the third team in the ninth-class district league A Gütersloh. In the junior division, the A, B and C juniors compete in the second-class Westfalenliga.

Fans

The club has an official fan club called The Hard Core , which, according to the club, is the only legitimate fan club. This was founded in 1999 and has around 60 members. The fan representative of SC Verl is Ralf Konrad. There are rivalries with FC Gütersloh , SV Lippstadt 08 and local rivals FC Kaunitz .
