history

Foundation and the way up (1945 to 1982)

ASC Schöppingen was founded in 1945. Between 1956 and 1964 the club belonged to the sports association of the German youth force . For decades, the ASC footballers only played at the district level. In the mid-1970s, the grain distiller Ernst Sasse and the master butcher Heinz Tummel began to get involved financially with ASC. With Falk Dörr , a former Bundesliga player from Prussia Münster took over the coaching office. In his first season, Dörr led the ASC to the district championship and promotion to the district league. A year later, with a twelve point lead, the new championship and promotion to the then fourth-class national league succeeded .

There, the Schöppingen were ten points behind Eintracht Recklinghausen runner-up and clearly missed the third rise in a row. In March 1977 coach Dörr had to give up his position despite leading the table and was replaced by Helmut Menzel . This led the ASC to the national league championship in 1977 and promotion to the Westphalia Association . There the club set ninth place as a goal to qualify for the Oberliga Westfalen, which was introduced in 1978. This was clearly missed in 13th place, especially since the club was deducted points for the new entry Peter Wirsching due to a lack of playing authorization.

With that, the Schöppingen were back in fourth class. In the 1978/79 season, the club temporarily took the lead, finished sixth at the end of the season. For the following season, Herbert Eiteljörge , another ex-professional, took over as coach. Nevertheless, it was only enough to finish sixth in the 1979/80 season. A year later, the ASC finished fourth. The breakthrough came in 1982 under player-coach Hans-Werner Moors . Before the last matchday, Schöppinger and VfL Reken were tied at the top of the table. The ASC then beat Ahlener SV while Reken lost 2-1 to VfB 03 Bielefeld .

Senior league years (1982 to 1992)

In the league, the ASC was able to establish itself quickly and reached seventh place in the 1982/83 promotion season . A year later , the team fell back to 13th place, but were able to win both games against Preußen Münster. In the home game they even managed a 4-0 victory. For the 1984/85 season sparked Klaus Hilpert from the player-coach Hans-Werner Moors and heralded the most successful period in their history. With four points ahead of TuS Paderborn-Neuhaus , the Schöppingen secured the Westphalia Championship in the 1985/86 season and qualified for the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga . The specialist magazine Kicker introduced the club to its readers in an article entitled “Football between field and cattle”.

Bernard Dietz (2011)

In the promotion round, the team met Rot-Weiss Essen , FC St. Pauli , VfB Oldenburg and SC Charlottenburg . The ASC was considered an outsider and started with a 1: 3 defeat in front of 6,700 spectators against St. Pauli and then reached a 1: 1 in Charlottenburg. After a 2-0 win over Oldenburg, the Schöppingen lost the remaining five games and were bottom of the group. The highlight of the promotion round was the home game against Rot-Weiss Essen on the last day of the game, which was meaningless for the ASC. 8,000 spectators followed the game in the Preußenstadion in Münster and saw a 5-1 victory for the guests. Ulrich Gäher scored the honorary goal for the Schöppinger.

After a seventh place in the 1986/87 season , coach Hilpert left the club and became manager at VfL Bochum . His successor was ex-national player Bernard Dietz . Under his leadership, the Schöppingen returned to the top tier of the league. Dietz led the club in 1988 , 1989 and 1990 in third place, each with a clear gap to the champions Preußen Münster (1988 and 1989) and Arminia Bielefeld . In 1990 the Schöppingen reached the final of the Westphalia Cup and beat DSC Wanne-Eickel with a clear 5-0. The ASC qualified for the first and so far only time for the main round of the DFB Cup and met Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt in the first round . The Frankfurters with the newly crowned world champions Uwe Bein and Andreas Möller prevailed 2-1 in front of 4,800 spectators. Ludger Pickenäcker equalized in the meantime.

In the league season 1990/91 the team played for a long time for the championship. After a final sprint with 11: 1 points, the ASC was second in the table, one point behind SC Verl . The Schöppinger won their last game of the season 4-0 at Rot-Weiß Lüdenscheid , but the losers became champions with a 2-1 win at DSC Wanne-Eickel. The winning goal for SC Verl fell in the last minute of the game. As runner-up, the ASC took part in the German Amateur Championship . There the Schöppinger lost 2: 5 against the amateurs of Werder Bremen and then drew between Alemannia Aachen and Türkiyemspor Berlin . The ASC became third in the group.

In the fall of 1991, patron Tummel announced that he would cut back his financial contributions to the club from 1992 on. The reasons for this were the difficulties in finding new sponsors and the sharp drop in audience numbers. While an average of 1,523 spectators came in the 1985/86 championship season, only 653 spectators wanted to see the ASC home games on average in the 1990/91 vice championship season. Finally, the club applied to be grouped into the district league for the 1992/93 season. This application was initially rejected by the Football and Athletics Association of Westphalia , as they initially saw a disadvantage for the other district league clubs. Only after the association lodged an objection was the application approved. The ASC ended his last league season in 1991/92 in seventh place.

New beginning (since 1992)

The ASC began a fresh start in the district league in the 1992/93 season. Under player-coach Bernd Dirksen, the team was promoted to the national league, where the team reached seventh place in the 1998/99 season. After the turn of the millennium, the club's sporting decline began. In 2000, the Schöppinger were relegated from the regional league and two years later had to go to the district league A. There the ASC was promptly passed on to the district league B. In 2004 he was directly promoted to the district league A. After nine years, he was relegated to the district league B in 2013 after a 2-0 defeat in the decider against Grün-Weiß Hausdülmen . A year later the direct ascent succeeded. In 2018 the ASC became runner-up after the team lost the playoff for the relay victory against SpVgg Vreden II with 1: 5.
