Alfred "Alf" Nijhuis (born March 23, 1966 in Utrecht ) is a former Dutch soccer player and today's soccer coach .

Career as a player

Nijhuis, who struggled with growth problems and therefore lost touch with his teammates, could have signed a contract with the big club from Enschede , FC Twente , from the age of 17 , but not as a professional. After completing his studies, at the age of 21, he trained with the FC Twente first team for a month, but did not receive a contract offer. In 1987 he moved from the Dutch third division sports club Enschede , to which he had been a member since 1983, to the German upper division ASC Schöppingen (also the third division at the time) and completed training as an insurance and real estate agent.

In 1991 he joined the MSV Duisburg ; at its first trial training, the MSV had played in the second division. At 25 he was one of the youngest on the team. In the summer of 1997 he moved to Japan to the Urawa Red Diamonds and played in a team with Guido Buchwald and Txiki Begiristain . In the summer of 1998, on the recommendation of Scout Horst Köppel, BVB signed the now 32-year-old Nijhuis. In the second year, Borussia narrowly escaped relegation from the Bundesliga . In the third year he struggled with back problems.

In the summer of 2001, Nijhuis left BVB and signed a contract with Karlsruher SC , who had been promoted to the second division at the time , but ended the contract because of too high expectations of himself and doubts about his own fitness. He then received offers from the Dutch clubs FC Den Bosch and De Graafschap Doetinchem , but the KSC did not give Nijhuis any clearance. A short time later he ended his career and returned to Enschede.

Trainer

On July 1, 2012, Nijhuis took over the coaching position at the Westphalian league team SuS Stadtlohn and in 2014 led the team as champions in the Oberliga Westfalen . At the same time, he was a scout for Germany at Ajax Amsterdam . Before the start of the 2014/15 season, he resigned as a coach. From September 14, 2014 until the end of the 2014/15 season, he was assistant coach at Heracles Almelo in the Eredivisie .

From July 1, 2016, Nijhuis coached the East Westphalian regional league team SV Rödinghausen . At the beginning of March 2018, the club announced that it would not extend its contract , which would run until the end of the 2017/18 season. On April 25, 2018, he was released early after two significant defeats against SG Wattenscheid 09 and the Bonner SC .

On July 1, 2018, Nijhuis returned to Heracles Almelo as Chief Scout.
