Aitor Begiristain Mujika (born August 12, 1964 in Olaberria , Province of Gipuzkoa , Spain), nickname Txiki, occasionally in Castilian spelling the family name Beguiristáin Múgica , is a former Spanish football player (winger) and sports official.

Player career

The Basque Begiristain began his career in 1982 with the first division club Real Sociedad from San Sebastián . Height of his career there was the Cup win in 1987. Until 1988 he had denied 187 games before moving to the UEFA EURO 1988 to FC Barcelona moved. With this club he won four championships, once the European Cup , once the European Cup Winners' Cup , once the UEFA Super Cup and once the Copa del Rey .

In 1995 he moved to Deportivo La Coruña after 223 games and 63 goals . Here he won a title, namely the Supercopa de España . This title was his last in Spain, as he moved to Japan in 1997 for the Urawa Red Diamonds . After 61 first division games in the J. League , he ended his active career in 1999.

National team

Begiristain took part with the national team in the 1988 European Football Championship in Germany and the 1994 World Cup in the USA . At the European Championships, Spain was eliminated in the preliminary round, six years later at the World Cup only in the quarter-finals against the eventual finalist Italy .

Career as a sports director

After retiring as an active player, Begiristain began his career as sports director at FC Barcelona in 2003 . In summer 2010 he was replaced by Andoni Zubizarreta .

On October 28, 2012, he became director of sport at Manchester City .
