Andoni Zubizarreta Urreta (born October 23, 1961 in Vitoria ) is a Spanish football official and former football goalkeeper . Since October 2016 he has been working as sports director for the French first division club Olympique de Marseille .

He was the Spanish national record player from October 13, 1993 to November 15, 2011, then was replaced by Iker Casillas . With his 622 appearances, he is still the record player in the Spanish league . Because of his zeal for work and his strong leadership personality, he was also called El Centurión (Eng. The Centurio ).

Career

As a player

Zubizarreta was born in Vitoria-Gasteiz and spent his childhood in Aretxabaleta . At the local club Unión Deportiva Aretxabaleta , he began his career in 1977. After two years, the Basque moved to Deportivo Alavés for a year . He then moved to Athletic Bilbao and was Spanish champion twice (1983 and 1984). After joining FC Barcelona in 1986 , he won the European Cup (1992) and the Spanish championship four more times. In 1994 he changed clubs one last time, he went to Valencia CF , where he ended his career in 1998.

He played his first international match on January 23, 1985 against Finland (3-1). On June 24, 1998 he ended his national team career at the World Cup preliminary round match against Bulgaria (6-1).

“Zubi”, as he is called by fans and the media, was a World Cup participant in 1986 , 1990 , 1994 and 1998 . He also took part in the European Championships in 1984 , 1988 and 1996 .

As a functionary

Zubizarreta was the sports director at Athletic Bilbao for three years. Then he was seen as a commentator on television. In July 2010 he became sports director at FC Barcelona as the successor to Txiki Begiristain . He was released in early January 2015.

On October 27, 2016, he took over the post of sports director at the French first division club Olympique Marseille , and in mid-May 2020 the mutual separation took place.
