Iker Casillas Fernández (born May 20, 1981 in Móstoles ) is a former Spanish soccer goalkeeper who last played for FC Porto from 2015 to 2020 . From 1999 to 2015 he was active for Real Madrid and from 2000 to 2016 for the Spanish national team , of which he was the team captain . On February 18, 2020, he announced the end of his career.
Casillas is the only player to date to have been named World Goalkeeper of the Year five times in a row (from 2008 to 2012) and the first player to win 100 international matches. He was also named the best World Cup goalkeeper in 2010 with the Golden Glove and is considered one of the best goalkeepers in history. Because of his often spectacular parades he is also called San Iker (dt. Holy Iker ). As team captain, he led the Spanish national team to two European titles and in 2010 to the world title . With his 175th appearance in the European Cup, he set a new record in March 2017.
Career
In the club
real Madrid
Casillas grew up in the Madrid suburb of Móstoles. At the age of eight he started in Real Madrid's youth . On September 12, 1999, he made his debut in the Primera División in a 2-2 draw with Athletic Bilbao . At the beginning of his career, he ousted the injured Bodo Illgner from the regular team. Casillas benefited greatly from Illgner's commitment at a young age and said in 2000: "Bodo is an absolute top goalkeeper, from whom I have learned a lot and continue to learn a lot". With the “Royal”, Casillas won the Champions League three times (2000, 2002, 2014), five times the Spanish championship (2001, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2012), twice the Spanish Cup ( 2011 , 2014 ) and once each the World Cup (2002) and the Club World Cup (2014).
His strengths are his quick reactions and the one-on-one situation. At the beginning of his career, however, he had slight weaknesses in intercepting crosses . This weakness meant that he was not entirely undisputed in his early years and had to free up his place for his colleague César Sánchez in the meantime . In the 2001/02 Champions League final against Bayer 04 Leverkusen , he replaced the injured César and secured the 2-1 win with a few saves. As a result, he finally established himself in the goal of his team. He was named World Goalkeeper of the Year five times in a row by the IFFHS from 2008 onwards .
In December 2012, Casillas was demoted to substitute goalkeeper by coach José Mourinho and replaced by Antonio Adán . On January 23, 2013, Casillas broke a metacarpal bone during a cup game , after which he was out for two months. Due to his injury, Real Madrid signed Diego López shortly afterwards . After Casillas' recovery, Mourinho continued to hold on to López, which sparked controversy between the coach, players and fans. Even under Mourinho's successor Carlo Ancelotti , Casillas only stayed on the bench in the 2013/14 season . He was only seeded in games of the Champions League and the Copa del Rey . Real Madrid won both competitions. The ongoing discussion about goalkeepers ended with Diego López's move to AC Milan , whereupon Casillas started the 2014/15 season again as a regular goalkeeper despite the signing of Costa Rica's World Cup hero Keylor Navas .
FC Porto
In July 2015, after 725 appearances in 16 years for Real Madrid, Casillas moved to FC Porto for the 2015/16 season on a free transfer . On September 16, 2015, he played his 151st Champions League game and drew level with record player Xavi . He now tops the list with 176 games (as of July 17, 2020). On May 1, 2019, Casillas suffered a heart attack while training . By then he had completed 116 league appearances for FC Porto. At the beginning of November 2019, Casillas returned to training. In February 2020, the goalkeeper legend, who had not been part of the matchday squad in any competition in the current 2019/20 season , announced that he wanted to compete against incumbent Luis Rubiales in the election for president of the Spanish Football Association . At the same time he ended his playing career.
In the national team
Even in his youth, Casillas guarded the goal of the Spanish national team. With the U-16 he won the European Championship in 1997 , while he secured his team victory on penalties against Austria . In the same year he reached third place in the U-17 World Cup .
At the 1999 Junior World Cup in Nigeria , he won the country's first title at a FIFA tournament with Spain . Casillas himself had to share the position of goalkeeper with Daniel Aranzubia , but was particularly convincing in the quarter-finals, which the Iberians only won against Ghana on penalties . In the same year he also won the UEFA-CAF Meridian Cup .
For the Spanish senior national team, he already took part in the EM 2000 (still as a substitute goalkeeper), the 2002 World Cup , the 2004 European Championship , the 2006 World Cup , the 2008 European Championship , the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 European Championship . At the EM 2008 and EM 2012 he was European champion as captain with the Spanish national team .
On July 11, 2010, he also won the World Cup in South Africa with the national team. In the final, Spain beat the Netherlands 1-0 after extra time. In this game he saved two times in one-on-one situations against Arjen Robben .
He is the first goalkeeper to save a penalty in two World Cups: against Ireland in the round of 16 in 2002 and against Paraguay in the quarter-finals in 2010.
On November 14, 2009, he played his 100th international match against Argentina (final score 2: 1) in Madrid . On November 15, 2011, he played his 127th international match against Costa Rica and replaced Andoni Zubizarreta as Spain's record international player. On May 30, 2012, he won his 95th international match, beating the records of Ahmed Hassan ( Egypt ) and Lilian Thuram ( France ), who have won 94 games. In the 2012 European Championship final, he defended his title with the Spanish team and also won his 100th international match. He has also been in knockout matches for 990 minutes without conceding a goal.
At the 2014 World Cup , he initially made two appearances against the Netherlands and Chile. In the third game - and with no chance of progressing at the tournament - national coach del Bosque made numerous changes, including Pepe Reina instead of Casillas. Since Spain was eliminated in the preliminary round, Casillas had no further appearances at the World Cup.
On November 13, 2015, he stayed 2-0 against England for the 100th time in an international match without conceding a goal.
On June 1, 2016, he was in the Spanish goal for the 167th time in the EM preparatory game against South Korea. He set a new European record and surpassed the Latvian midfielder Vitālijs Astafjevs by one game according to the official count. In November, Gianluigi Buffon drew level with Casillas.
At the European Championships in 2016 , at the age of 35, he was once again included in the Spanish squad as number 1 . Although he had played the majority of the qualifying games, David de Gea also recommended himself for the European Championship during the season at the club due to his performance. In the end, the decision was made in favor of de Gea, who was almost ten years younger than him, and Casillas was not involved in his last national team tournament to date. The goalkeeper still secured another record, as no other player in the history of the European Championship can show five finals.
