Daniel Aranzubia Aguado (born September 18, 1979 in Logroño ) is a Spanish football player .

Club career

From his own youth, Aranzubia was able to work his way up to the goalkeeper in the Primera División for Athletic Bilbao , where he was under contract as a professional player from 2000 to 2008 for a total of eight years. He is one of the few non-Basque native players to ever play for Bilbao. The club is known to include mostly Basques in its squad. Since Aranzubia grew up in the Basque Country, he did not violate the specially imposed regulations. After he was only the third goalkeeper in the summer of 2008, he left the club and joined Deportivo La Coruña . On February 20, 2011 he succeeded in stoppage time against UD Almería a header goal after a corner. It was the first goal by a goalkeeper in the history of the Spanish Primera División. In total, he played 178 games in the first and second division for Deportivo. After relegation in the 2012/13 season , he moved to Atlético Madrid .

National team

On June 5, 2004, Aranzubia played his first and only international match for the Spanish national team while preparing for the 2004 European Championship in a 4-0 win against Andorra when he came on after half an hour for the injured Santiago Cañizares .
