Carlos Marchena López (born July 31, 1979 in Las Cabezas , Seville province ) is a Spanish football player .
society
Marchena was active at Sevilla FC until 2000 . At the age of 20 he played his first game for the first team in a 2-2 draw against Real Sociedad in August 1999. During his one-year stint in Lisbon at Benfica (2000/01), he played so convincingly that Valencia CF took an interest in him and signed him for four years in the summer of 2001.
In the first season (2001/02) Marchena still had teething problems, but in the second year he was Spanish champion with Valencia. In the 2003/04 season he formed together with Roberto Ayala , arguably the best central defense that Valencia has ever had. This year they won the Spanish championship , the UEFA Cup and the European Super Cup. Due to this good performance, Marchena was appointed to the squad for the 2004 European Championship . In the 2004/05 season Marchena was not so successful with Valencia: only 7th in the league and eliminated early in the European Cup. In the 2005/06 season things were on the up again, he was third in the Spanish league with Valencia. Also in the 2006/07 season, where he was missing for a long time due to a knee injury, he achieved a good placement with Valencia, fourth place.
In the 2007/08 season he was able to win the Spanish Cup with Valencia despite a miserable season (elimination in the group stage of the Champions League and fight against relegation in the Primera División).
In August 2010 he signed a three-year contract with Villarreal FC .
After relegation with Villarreal, Marchena moved to Deportivo La Coruña for the 2012/13 season .
National team
In the national team he first came on August 21, 2002 against Hungary (1: 1). He participated in the 2004 European Cup , 2006 World Cup of Euro 2008 in part and the 2010 World Cup. In the last two tournaments he was able to win the title with his team, and in 2008 he was one of the Spaniards' regular squad. At the 2010 World Cup, he was substituted on in three games shortly before the end. In addition, he set the record for Brazil's football legend Garrincha in the game against Saudi Arabia on May 29, 2010, and was undefeated in his 50th international match in a row.
