José Manuel "Pepe" Reina Páez (born August 31, 1982 in Madrid ) is a Spanish football goalkeeper who is under contract with Lazio Rome .
Career

Reina was born in Madrid and began his professional career at FC Barcelona . Here he made his professional debut at the age of 18 and played 30 point games in two seasons. In order to gain match practice, he moved to the first division club Villarreal in 2002 . In the 2004/05 season he reached a Champions League place with Villarreal . This season he saved seven of nine penalties shot .
For the 2005/06 season Reina moved to the Premier League for Liverpool FC . Here he ousted Jerzy Dudek , one of the contributors in the Champions League final of 2005 , as a regular goalkeeper. In his first season he won the FA Cup with Liverpool on penalties against West Ham United and the European Supercup against CSKA Moscow . In the following season 2006/07 he reached the final of the Champions League with Liverpool FC , but had to admit defeat to AC Milan . On April 9, 2010, the goalkeeper extended his contract by six years to June 30, 2016. At the end of the 2009/10 season he was voted Player of the Season by Liverpool fans.
For the 2013/14 season Reina moved on loan to Serie A for Italian first division club Napoli . After Simon Mignolet signed on , he would have threatened to lose his regular place a year before the 2014 World Cup . He won the Coppa Italia with Naples in 2014 .
For the 2014/15 season Reina moved to FC Bayern Munich , where he signed a three-year contract. On October 6, 2014, he suffered a muscle injury during a game against a fan selection and was out for several weeks. He made his Bundesliga debut on March 14, 2015 (25th matchday) in a 4-0 win in the away game against Werder Bremen . In his third appearance in the Bundesliga on May 9, 2015 (32nd matchday) against FC Augsburg , he saw the red card in the 13th minute and was suspended until the end of the season. He was the first Spanish goalkeeper in the Bundesliga.
Since Reina wanted to be the goalkeeper again, FC Bayern Munich complied with his request and terminated his contract, which was still valid for two seasons. Reina then returned to Serie A at SSC Napoli for the 2015/16 season .
For the season 2018/19 Reina moved to AC Milan . He signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2021. As a substitute for Gianluigi Donnarumma , he played in his first year for Milan in the UEFA Europa League , in the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the Coppa Italia and in four league games.
With the loan deal between AC Milan and Aston Villa , Reina plays the second half of the 2019/20 season for the English first division club.
For the 2020/21 season, Reina from Milan switched to league rivals Lazio Rome , where he is said to be number 2 behind the Albanian national goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha .
National team
Pepe Reina made his debut in the senior national football team on August 17, 2005 in a 2-0 win in the international test match against the Uruguayan selection . He was the third goalkeeper behind Iker Casillas and Santiago Cañizares to the squad for the 2006 World Cup in Germany , but was not used.
In 2008 Reina took part with the senior national team at the 2008 European Championships in Austria and Switzerland and finished as European Champion. He was used in this tournament in the 2-1 win against the selection of Greece . At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa , he was the second goalkeeper to become world champion. At the European Championships in 2012 in Poland and Ukraine , Reina was again European champion with the senior national team, but was again second goalkeeper behind Iker Casillas . At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , he was again a substitute goalkeeper behind Casillas and came in the third - after two defeats insignificant - group game against the selection of Australia for his only tournament game.
