Thomas Fotaq Strakosha (born March 19, 1995 in Athens , Greece ) is an Albanian football goalkeeper . He is under contract with Lazio Rome in the Italian Serie A and is an Albanian international .

Career

Begins in Greece and moved to Italy

Strakosha began his football career in 2011 in the youth club of the Greek first division club Panionios Athens . After his first season he was signed for a sum of 75,000 euros by Lazio Rome , where he was used in the U19 team between 2012 and 2014.

Professional football

In the 2012/13 season , Strakosha succeeded by selling her goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo to Inter Milan , making it into the professional squad of Lazio Rome, where he was initially intended as the third goalkeeper behind Federico Marchetti and Albano Bizzarri . When Bizzarri was sold to CFC Genoa in September 2013 and instead Etrit Berisha was signed by the Swedish first division club Kalmar FF , Strakosha remained third goalkeeper at Lazio. Although Strakosha hadn't played a single game for the Italians, his contract was extended to 2019 in July 2014.

In July 2015 Strakosha was awarded to the second division promoted US Salernitana in order to be able to collect match practice there. On August 19, 2015, the young Albanian played his first competitive game in Salernitana's 1-0 win in the second round of Coppa Italia against AC Pisa . Just a week later, Strakosha played again in the Italian Cup against Chievo Verona and had a large share in the progression to the next cup round through several parades. On September 6, 2015 Strakosha made his debut on the first match day of Serie B against the US Avellino 1912 , which Salernitana won 3-1. This season Strakosha only played eleven games and went back to Lazio after the loan contract ended.

Back in Rome, Strakosha became the team's first goalkeeper following the injury of Marchetti and the sale of Berisha to Atalanta Bergamo and made his debut for Lazio on September 20, 2016 in the Serie A match against AC Milan : 0 defeat showed a good performance. Five days later, Strakosha played for the first time to zero against FC Empoli . Former Italian national goalkeeper Dino Zoff praised the then 21-year-old Albanian for his performance in both games.

In February 2017, his contract was extended until 2022. Strakosha played his first season at Lazio from this point in time and reached fifth place in Serie A and the final of Coppa Italia , which however was lost 2-0 to Juventus Turin . On August 13, 2017, Lazio won the Supercoppa Italiana , the Italian Supercup, 3-2 against Juventus . With the success Strakosha was in the goal.

National team

Strakosha was appointed for the first time in 2012 for the U17 national team of Albania , which at that time was appointed to the elite round of qualifying for the U17 European Championship , but remained in all three games without a stake. On February 26, 2012 Strakosha made his debut in the Albanian U17 national team in a friendly against Bulgaria , which was won 2-0.

Under his father, Foto Strakosha , the then U19 national coach , Strakosha was appointed to qualify for the 2013 U19 European Championship . Strakosha played all three games where he conceded a total of six goals and Albania could only win against the Belgian selection . Despite the success against Belgium, Albania was eliminated from the bottom of the group. In the following year, Strakosha took part with the Albanian U19 team in the qualification for a U19 European Championship and were again last of them with two 1-1 draws against Slovakia and Bulgaria , as well as a 1-0 defeat against the Greek team Group. Strakosha was appointed by U20 coach Skënder Gega for the Mediterranean Games 2013 in the squad of the U20 selection , but completed no game under him.

Strakosha was nominated for the Albanian U21s in 2015 , where he played four games as part of qualifying for the 2015 U21 European Championship . In the qualifying round for the 2017 European Under-21 Championship , Strakosha only missed three games: he had to cancel the first group game due to an injury, in the game against Portugal Strakosha was on the bench, and in the last qualifying game Strakosha was not considered due to a nomination for the Albanian national team .

Strakosha was called up by national coach Gianni De Biasi for the first time in August 2016 in the squad of the senior national team of Albania for a friendly match against the selection of Morocco and the subsequent World Cup qualifier against Macedonia , but was not used in any of the games. Even for the qualifying game in November against Israel , Strakosha was not used despite the nomination. Due to a suspension of the actual goalkeeper Etrit Berisha , Strakosha made his debut in the Albanian national team on March 24, 2017 in the 2-0 defeat in the World Cup qualifier against Italy .
