Simone Inzaghi (born April 5, 1976 in Piacenza , Italy ) is a former Italian football player and current coach .
His older brother Filippo Inzaghi was also a soccer player.
Player career
In the club
After playing in the youth of FC Piacenza , Simone Inzaghi signed his first professional contract in 1994. However, in the first few years he was awarded to various clubs in Serie C1 and Serie C2 in order to get match practice and to gain first experience. After a convincing season with US Brescello , he returned to Serie A to his hometown club FC Piacenza and scored 15 goals in 30 games .
In the following season he was courted by many top Italian clubs, where he ultimately chose Lazio Rome . This season he celebrated his greatest successes with Lazio. He scored nine goals in eleven Champions League games, four of them in the match against Olympique Marseille alone , which meant the setting of Marco van Basten's 1992 record . In addition, with seven goals this season in Serie A and several goals in Coppa Italia, he also played an important role in the second championship and the third cup victory in Lazio.
However, Simone Inzaghi could never show the performance from the first season again in the following years, so that he was first awarded to Sampdoria Genoa for six months at the beginning of 2005 and after two unsuccessful years with only twelve games and zero goals for Lazio Loaned at Atalanta Bergamo . There he could not assert himself either and was mostly only substituted, which is why he returned to Lazio after a year.
In the 2008/09 season he scored his first Serie A goal since 2004 against US Lecce . Inzaghi ended his playing career at the end of the 2009/10 season.
In the national team
Simone Inzaghi completed three international matches for the Italian national team from 2000 to 2003 . However, he could never prevail against competitors such as Christian Vieri , Francesco Totti , Alessandro Del Piero and his brother Filippo Inzaghi .
Coaching career
After the end of his career, Inzaghi coached the youth team of the allievi regionali age group at Lazio Rome. On April 3, 2016, he became the coach of the professional team of Lazio, as he stood in as a replacement for the dismissed Stefano Pioli .
Inzaghi's contract ended at the beginning of the 2016/17 season . The club presented Marcelo Bielsa as his successor, but he resigned two days after his presentation due to differences with the club's management. Inzaghi was reinstalled as head coach. In June 2019, Lazio extended his contract with him until the end of the 2020/21 season.
