Silvestro "Silvio" Proto (born May 23, 1983 in Charleroi , Hainaut province ) is a Belgian football goalkeeper of Italian descent who has been under contract with Lazio since 2018 .

Career

In the club

Proto began his football career in his hometown Charleroi with the Olympic club . From there moved to the youth of the RAA La Louvière . From the youth of the club, he made it to the professional team. Proto made his Jupiler Pro League debut in the 2001/02 season when Jan Van Steenberghe was not ready for action. Over time, he was more and more often between the posts for La Louvière and surprisingly won the Belgian Cup with the team in 2003. He then stayed with the club for two years and was even voted Belgium's goalkeeper of the year in his last season there before he moved to RSC Anderlecht . In Anderlecht, he was initially only a substitute goalkeeper behind Daniel Zítka and only made sporadic appearances. When Proto then seemed ready to replace Zítka, he was slowed down by a foot injury. After he recovered, he was loaned to league rivals Germinal Beerschot for one season. In Antwerp he showed good performances and even scored the equalizer to 2-2 in the 92nd minute in the game against KAA Gent . Back at Anderlecht, Proto quickly became the club's regular goalkeeper. In the 2016/17 season he was under contract with KV Ostend before moving to Olympiacos Piraeus . There he made 22 league appearances and was also used five times in the Champions League. At the end of the season he moved to Lazio Rome , where he has so far not been able to prevail against Thomas Strakosha .

In the national team

Proto's career in the national team began in the youth field. He also took part in the U-19 European Football Championship in Norway in 2002 and was last in the group stage with Belgium. Proto made his senior national team debut in 2006 World Cup qualification in the 2-0 defeat against Serbia-Montenegro . After that he came to further missions up to 2006. This was followed by a performance low due to injuries and therefore he was no longer nominated for the time being. After he showed good performances again at Germinal Beerschot, he was nominated again for the national team and has so far made two more appearances.
