Career
In the club
Totti made his Serie A debut on March 28, 1993 under coach Vujadin Boškov at the age of 16. In the 1994/95 season he established himself in the club as a regular and scored four goals in 21 games. In the following seasons he caused a sensation with strong performances at the Giallorossi . In the 2000/01 season , Totti, as captain and playmaker, finally led his team with 13 goals to the first championship title in Serie A since 1983.
In the following years AS Roma established themselves as a top team thanks to Totti's goals. The team did not win another championship title, but has been runner-up nine times since then ( 2001/02 , 2003/04 , 2005/06 , 2006/07 , 2007/08 , 2009/10 , 2013/14 , 2014/15 , 2016 / 17 ). In the 2006/07 season he was the top scorer with 26 goals, with 6 goals ahead of the runner-up. Thanks to his personal goal record, Totti also won the European Golden Shoe one goal ahead of Real Madrid's Ruud van Nistelrooy .
Totti and AS Roma were also successful in the Coppa Italia : In 2003, the team reached the cup final for the first time since 1993. From 2005 to 2008 this was achieved four times in a row. In 2007 AS Rom won the Coppa for the first time since 1991. She defended the title in 2008. In 2010, Rome failed in the final at Inter Milan, Totti himself was sent off after a red card : he brutally kicked Inter striker Mario Balotelli from behind in the 88th minute. Totti then stated that he had been provoked several times by Balotelli, while the dark-skinned Balotelli stated that Totti had insulted him racially.
On March 17, 2013, he took over with his 226th goal, the second position in the all-time goalscorer list of the Serie A and outstripped Gunnar Nordahl .
On May 3, 2017, AS Roma announced that Francesco Totti would end his active career at the end of the 2016/17 season . He played his last game for AS Roma on May 28, 2017 at the home game against CFC Genoa . Two days later, on May 30, 2017, Totti announced that he wanted to continue his playing career at another club. On July 17, 2017, however, Totti announced the final end of his professional career.
National team
Totti has played in all of the Italian national youth teams from U-15 to U-21. In July 1995 he was runner-up in the U-18 team and scored the consolation goal for Italy in the 4-1 defeat against Spain . In the following year he won the U-21 European title , in the final it was again against the Iberians. Totti scored the interim goal, after which Italy won 5-4 on penalties.
The Roman made his debut in the senior national team on October 10, 1998 under Dino Zoff in a 2-0 victory in the European Championship qualification against Switzerland in Udine . He scored his first goal in the Squadra Azzurra jersey on April 26, 2000 in a friendly against Portugal (2-0). In the same year he made his international breakthrough at the European Championships in Belgium and the Netherlands in 2000 . He scored one goal in the group game against Belgium (2-0), and another in a 2-0 quarter-final win against Romania . With his trademark, the cucchiaio (actually spoon ; Lupfer), he paved Italy's way into the final in a penalty shootout against the Netherlands , where he was voted player of the game despite the 2-1 defeat against France .
His first soccer World Cup in 2002 in Japan and South Korea was unfortunate. In the lost round of 16 against South Korea , Totti was sent off because of a questionable swallow by the Ecuadorian referee Byron Moreno with yellow and red.
At the 2004 European Championships he was noticeable in the preliminary round match against Denmark because he spat at Christian Poulsen three times after he had repeatedly provoked him. He only saw the rest of the tournament in the stands, as he was suspended for three games and Italy did not reach the semi-finals.
On 19 February 2006, he broke the league match against FC Empoli the fibula and several torn ligaments put in hock to. After the successful operation and the use of a metal plate fixed with twelve screws in the leg, his participation in the World Cup in Germany seemed to be in jeopardy for some time, but just under a month before the start of the tournament he was able to celebrate his comeback in the Italian cup final between Rome and Inter Milan . National coach Marcello Lippi had previously stated that he would also take an injured or ailing Totti with him to Germany. Lippi called him on May 15, 2006 in the World Cup squad.
In the round of 16 of the 2006 World Cup against Australia on June 26, 2006, Francesco Totti converted the decisive penalty in stoppage time of the second half after being substituted in in the only game in which he did not start from the start. Although he could never quite come close to his old class at this tournament due to his training deficit, he was still on the pitch in all seven Italian games and with his penalty goal and three assists he played an important role on the way to the World Cup.
After the World Cup in Germany, Francesco Totti initially announced his temporary resignation from the national team, on July 20, 2007 he announced his final resignation.
Cult status in Rome
Francesco Totti's cult status is also due to the fact that he is a “Romano di Roma”, i.e. a native Roman and not a newcomer. He has been with AS Roma since his youth . He was firmly rooted in the AS through his family. When representatives of Roma's arch rivals Lazio Rome wanted to recruit 13-year-old Francesco, they were chased out of the house. As a teenager, Totti attended the games of his favorite club at the Stadio Olimpico .
From the 1997/98 season until the end of his career in the 2016/17 season he was team captain of the "Roma" and increasingly became a figure of identification for the "Romanisti", who often just call him "Il Capitano", the captain.
