Playmaker

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A playmaker is spoken of in various team sports when a player leads a team and is the center of the team's game.

Soccer

In football , one speaks of a playmaker when, during a football game, one player in particular takes on the task of controlling the team's game strategy, initiating attacks, coordinating defensive behavior, distributing balls to other players, being ready to play at any time, in the opposing penalty area acts and ideally also scores goals.

In the 4-4-2 system, the playmaker usually has the position in the central offensive midfield ( midfielder ) and often wears jersey number 10. Sometimes the playmakers are not assigned a fixed position. Playmakers usually have excellent technical skills , but must also be able to effectively disrupt the opponent through committed and combative effort and to motivate their own team to selfless efforts.

In this classic form, the playmaker is usually a special player personality within the team and also takes on management tasks within the team.

In some - mostly newer - game systems the typical "10-man playmaker" is often dispensed with - especially in systems that attack via heavily occupied flanks, but also in teams in which several excellent midfielders act with quick changes of position and fast-moving advances make the game very varied.

A mixture of several equal players (see previous examples) in the midfield usually forms the creative switching station. The game is developed through the well-rehearsed interaction of the players without a direct leading figure with the subordinate players.

A disadvantage of the system with a single playmaker is that the opponent can take him out of the game (e.g. by man marking or double man marking) and the attacking game comes to a standstill.

Many teams are now starting to stop playing a single player as a playmaker. A decisive advantage is that the creativity and technique of several players come together and can be varied as required. In addition, weaknesses that are dependent on daily form can be compensated for by distributing the tasks. However, this form of football is much more training-intensive and complicated than giving a player the typical playmaker role.

Examples of outstanding playmakers in football were Wolfgang Overath , Pelé , Diego Maradona , Johan Cruyff , Lothar Matthäus and Zico .

In Italian football, a distinction is made between two types of playmaker: the trequartista , a playmaker in a central and offensive position, and the regista, a lower-level playmaker who takes on defensive tasks and pushes forward from the depths of the space.

Examples of trequartisti are Ronaldinho , Andrés Iniesta , Wesley Sneijder , Mesut Özil , Michel Platini , Kaká , Dragan Stojković , Zinedine Zidane , Roberto Baggio , Steven Gerrard and Francesco Totti .

Well-known registi are Andrea Pirlo , Xavi , Xabi Alonso , Luka Modrić , Toni Kroos and Bastian Schweinsteiger .

Handball

In handball , the playmaker is the playing position in the central back area (center back area).

basketball

In basketball , the player who announces moves and thus directs the attacking game is referred to as the playmaker, hence the name of the development player. Usually it is the player in position 1, the so-called point guard .

volleyball

In volleyball, the controller , i.e. H. the 3-position (III), the structure player . He takes i. d. Usually the "second ball" and presents it to an attacker (2 / II or 4 / IV, attacking player / offensive player). With the Mäuschen game tactic , the operator takes two steps to the side and moves away from the net if necessary, while the middle player / central player (5 / V, defender / defensive player) takes his position so that three attackers are now available.

ice Hockey

The playmaker in ice hockey (center) is, as the name suggests, to be found in the center of the playing field.

This applies above all to the opponent, who is not forbidden according to the rules to attack the playmaker with checks etc. in the game, but is not happy to see him fouled. This is considered a violation of the unofficial code of honor among ice hockey players and is answered by the entire team through consistent backfouling of the fouling player.
