Luka Modrić [ ˈluːka ˈmɔːdritɕ ] (born September 9, 1985 in Zadar ) is a Croatian football player who has played for Real Madrid since 2012 . He previously played at Dinamo Zagreb and Tottenham Hotspur . He also won the Croatian Championship three times with Dinamo Zagreb ( 2006 , 2007 , 2008 ), twice the Croatian Football Cup (2007, 2008) and once the Croatian Supercup (2006). With Real Madrid, he won the Champions League four times ( 2014 , 2016 , 2017 , 2018 ) and the FIFA Club World Cup ( 2014 , 2016 , 2017 , 2018 ) and the UEFA Super Cup three times ( 2014 , 2016 , 2017 ). He also won the Spanish Supercup twice with Madrid ( 2012 , 2017 ), twice the Spanish Championship ( 2017 and 2020 ) and once the Spanish Cup ( 2014 ).

Modrić is the captain of the Croatian national team . He was able to become vice world champion in Russia ( 2018 ) and was awarded the Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament .

In 2018 he became the first Croatian to be voted FIFA World Player of the Year . He also received the Ballon d'Or and the title of European Footballer of the Year .

Early years

Luka Modrić grew up in the village of Zaton Obrovački near his native Zadar . After the outbreak of the Croatian War in 1991, he and his family were driven out by Serbian militants . Modrić's grandfather and six other civilians were murdered by Serbian militants in the village of Jasenice in December 1991 .

The midfielder played in his youth at NK Zadar , a club in his hometown. From there, scouts of the Croatian capital club Dinamo Zagreb brought him in 2001 in their youth department. As a youth player, he signed his first professional contract with Dinamo Zagreb.

In 2003 he was awarded to HŠK Zrinjski Mostar in the Premijer League in Bosnia and Herzegovina to let him gain experience in the professional field. There he was honored as the best player in the Premier League at the age of 18. In 2004 he was loaned to Inter Zaprešić . From 2005 he played again at Dinamo Zagreb and was an integral part of the first team. In 2008 he moved to Tottenham Hotspur. There he established himself after a short time as a regular player and playmaker of the team. In the summer of 2012, Modrić struck training at Tottenham Hotspur for two days to force a move to Real Madrid, as he felt the transfer fee demanded by his club was too high. Tottenham Hotspur fined Modrić £ 80,000. He ended his strike, but was no longer allowed to participate in team training; He had to train alone for two months.

On August 27, 2012, both clubs agreed on a transfer. Modrić signed a five-year contract with Real. The fee was around 35 million euros. Modric played his first competitive game in the second leg of the Spanish Supercup against FC Barcelona . On the 3rd matchday of the Primera División , he made his league debut against Granada CF. He scored his first goal on matchday 10 in a 4-0 win over Real Saragossa . His contract runs until June 30, 2020. At Real Madrid, Modrić shaped an era with players like Cristiano Ronaldo , Karim Benzema , Gareth Bale , Isco , Sergio Ramos , Raphaël Varane , Dani Carvajal , Marcelo , Toni Kroos , Casemiro and Keylor Navas . In addition to winning the championship in the 2016/17 season and the Copa del Rey in the 2013/14 season , he won the Champions League four times in 2014 , 2016 , 2017 and 2018 . There were also wins from the UEFA Super Cup, the Club World Cup and the Spanish Super Cup.

Because of his stature and long hair, Modrić has also been called el pony since he played in Madrid .

Luka Modrić went through all Croatian youth teams as a teenager and was captain of the U21 team .

At the age of 20, Modrić made his debut on March 1, 2006 in a friendly against Argentina in the senior team . As a result, he was in the Croatian squad at the 2006 World Cup and has been an integral part of the team since the 2006/07 season. He scored his first goal on August 16, 2006 in a friendly against Italy . At the European Championship 2008 Modrić scored his first goal in a tournament with the winning goal in the first game against Austria . In the quarter-finals against Turkey he gave the template to 1-0 shortly before the end of extra time, but was the first shooter to miss on penalties.

Modrić was also nominated for the following major tournaments, the Euro 2012 , World Cup 2014 and Euro 2016 . While the team was eliminated in the preliminary round in 2012 and 2014, the squad made it into the round of 16 in 2016, but failed in extra time to Portugal .

At the 2018 World Cup in Russia , Modrić was also part of the Croatian squad , which he led as team captain. In the opening game against Nigeria he scored the 2-0 final score, in the 3-0 win against Argentina he also scored the second goal. In the second round against Denmark Modrić failed a few minutes before the end of the extension with a penalty against the Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel . Croatia and Modrić were subsequently in a World Cup final for the first time, but lost 2: 4 to France. After the tournament, he was supported by the FIFA with the Golden Ball award as the best player of the tournament.

In May 2010 Modrić married his long-time girlfriend Vanja Bosnić. Best man was Vedran Ćorluka . Their son was born in June 2010 and their first daughter was born in April 2013. In October 2017, their third child, another daughter, was born.

Modrić speaks Croatian , English and Spanish .

tax evasion

Modrić was convicted of tax evasion and accepted the prison sentence. He has been found guilty on two counts and sentenced to eight months in prison. When marketing his image rights, he is said to have smuggled around 870,000 euros past the Spanish tax authorities through a company in Luxembourg that was run by his wife and named after his son . A back payment of around 348,000 euros was agreed with the public prosecutor. In order not to have to start the prison sentence, the player had to pay an additional 60,000 euros.
