The International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) is an international association of football statisticians . The seat is in Zurich , Switzerland . The IFFHS is known for its numerous book publications on the history of football and for the elections it held, of which in particular the awards for the world goalkeeper and the world referee are widely spread in the media. According to its own information, the organization has around 200 members in 120 countries.
Goals and Activities
The aim is a comprehensive documentation of the sport of football . To this end, the association keeps statistics on international games , Olympic football tournaments , continental competitions, national championships and cup competitions, regularly compiles a club world rankings and collects bizarre facts, which it also publishes on the Internet . Furthermore, the IFFHS holds numerous elections every year, among others for world goalkeeper, world goal scorer or world referee.
In the past, the organization published several football magazines. In addition, books have been published on A-international matches, the Olympic football tournaments, on the European Football Cup competitions and on the company's own elections and events. Both the publication of the magazines and the book editions planned as series ceased in the early 2000s. From then on one concentrated exclusively on the publication on the Internet.
history
The association was founded on March 27, 1984 in Leipzig by its long-time first President Alfredo Pöge . In June 1985, Pöge and his family left the GDR - according to his own statement he was urged to do so - and settled in Wiesbaden . Later Pöge moved his residence and thus also the headquarters of the IFFHS to Bonn .
From 1987 to 2002 the organization published the world football magazine and another magazine, Libero , of which there were at times the variants special German and international . In the 1980s and 1990s, the IFFHS also published a number of books and other print publications with statistical evaluations from the history of football, which were later discontinued due to financial difficulties.
At the beginning of the awarding of the honors in the late 1980s, they still caused a lot of media coverage. The sporting goods manufacturer Uhlsport sponsored the world goalkeeper election and a Hessian hotel chain took over the travel expenses of the stars to the annual World Football Gala in Fulda organized by the IFFHS . 1988 and 1989 - at that time still conducted IFFHS-election as FIFA World Player Marco van Basten and 1990 Lothar Matthaus won - rose Adidas is a sponsor until 1991, the FIFA own World Player election started and the IFFHS their established. For a long time, the results of the IFFHS elections were disseminated in many media and the award ceremony was accompanied by live broadcasts on the TV channels RTLplus , DSF and the Italian broadcaster RAI . In March 2006, Pöge presented the IFFHS awards to José Mourinho , Petr Čech and Markus Merk live in the current sports studio on ZDF .
After a court case in 2006 revealed that the IFFHS was nowhere officially registered as an association of persons and doubts about the seriousness of the IFFHS became louder (see also the section “ Criticism ”), the IFFHS increasingly moved into a niche. The German Press Agency stopped reporting IFFHS statistics and awards and the last sponsors dropped out. The last World Football Gala took place in 2008, and since then the IFFHS has only reported its election results via its own website.
The organization is led by an executive committee consisting of the president, three deputies and other members. After Alfredo Pöge's death on March 26, 2013, the long-standing IFFHS Vice President Robert Ley from France took over the interim presidency. In March 2014, the members of the Executive Committee Saleh Salem Bahwini from Saudi Arabia were elected as the new President for an initial five years . He was re-elected in April 2019. During his first term of office, the organization's headquarters were relocated from Lausanne to Kloten , and the legal status of the organization was clarified with the Swiss authorities. So far, members have been appointed from a pool of candidates at the suggestion of other members.

criticism
The renowned Cologne football historian Karl Lennartz described the IFFHS as "obscure" and suspected that it was largely a "one-man event" by the former President Alfredo Pöge. On the other hand, well-known journalists and statisticians are named as authors in articles from magazines published by the IFFHS, including Karl-Heinz Jens, Gerhard Raschke, Colin José and Kaare M. Torgrimsen. In addition, numerous IFFHS members were presented on their own website, including a. also several authors of the articles developed so far for the period 1872 to 1910. After Pöge's death in March 2013, the official homepage of the IFFHS was temporarily no longer updated. The subsequently revised page no longer contains any football historical information, only the honors carried out by the IFFHS.
It remains striking that at least from the leading football nations such as England, Italy, Brazil, Argentina and Germany, no well-known journalists or other experts were known as members of the IFFHS. Of the 13 listed members of the so-called Executive Committee , only the Mexican author Carlos F. Ramírez and the Canadian author and association statistician Colin José were considered to be authorities in the field of football. The other members were hardly or not at all known outside of the direct environment of the IFFHS. Participants in elections for honors issued by the IFFHS were not clearly specified. Instead, “selected specialist editors” were specified as jurors, or the choice was made “in individual cases under the direction of IFFHS members by experts”.
The professional world had given the IFFHS print publications from the 1980s and 1990s extensive recognition, as they opened up new territory with regard to the presentation of historical, particularly statistical details from German and international football history. Throughout all texts were given the real names of the authors. After financial problems led to the discontinuation of these publications, the IFFHS shifted its focus to the ranking lists it published and the elections carried out. In parts of the German media landscape, there are considerable doubts about their significance. While the IFFHS information appears after the discontinuation of its own print products mainly in publications that were distributed with the help of the sports information service ("sid"), the German press agency ("dpa") completely dispensed with the reports.
