The FC Persepolis ( Persian باشگاه فوتبال پرسپولیس) is an Iranian football club from the capital Tehran .

The Persepolis football club is the best-known and most successful division of the Persepolis Athletic and Cultural Club , which covers a wide range of sports from youth to top-level sports in a total of nine departments. Other branches are basketball , bowling , futsal , handball , karate , swimming , taekwondo and volleyball .

With twelve championship titles, Persepolis is currently Iran's record champions. According to surveys by the Asian Football Confederation, the club has the most supporters in Asia. According to an SMS voting for program 90 , Iran's most popular sports program , 61% of Iranian football fans support “the reds” from the capital.

Since September 19, 2006 the football club Sorkhpoushan Delvar Afzar is the reserve team of Persepolis Tehran. Sorkhpoushan plays in the Azadegan League (2nd division).

The club plays its home games at the Azadi Stadium , which officially seats 78,116 spectators.

Arch-rivals are Esteghlal FC , against whom the Tehran derby will be played.

history

The Azadi Stadium before the renovation

In 1963 the Persepolis Sports Club was founded by Ali Abdo. The focus was on basketball , volleyball and bowling , the soccer team only played in the second division. When Shahin FC went bankrupt in 1967 , most players moved to Persepolis. Reinforced in this way, the club quickly established itself among the top teams in Iran and in 1973/1974 they won their first title.

After the Islamic Revolution , several players left the club, whose owners changed several times in the following years. After a number of attempts, the Iranian Ministry of Sports succeeded in 1987 in renaming the club in Pirouzi (in German: victory ), which was not accepted by the supporters or in the wider community (including the media). Since April 2012 the association is officially called Persepolis again.

The team always achieved good results in the top five. In the 1990s, some championship and cup titles could be won. In 1990, the most important international success was achieved by winning the Asian Cup Winners' Cup .

In the 2000s, the club was again Iranian champions in the 2001/2002 and 2007/2008 seasons . The club won the national Hazfi Cup in the last two cup rounds in 2009/2010 and 2010/2011.
