Tehran Derby ( Persian شهرآورد تهران) is the name of the derby between the football clubs Esteghlal and Persepolis in the Iranian capital Tehran . It is one of the most traditional rivalries in Asian football.

Sociological Aspects of Rivalry

Traditionally, Esteghlal (Eng. "Independence") is considered a representative of the middle and upper classes, while Persepolis (Eng. " City of the Persians ") is considered to represent the common people. The Esteghlal FC, originally founded under the name Taj (dt. "Krone"), was closely intertwined with the regime of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi until the Iranian revolution (1978/79) , while immediately after the revolution in Pirouzi or Piroozi (dt . "Victory") renamed Persepolis FC received the support of the new government and was affiliated to the Ministry of Mines and Metal and is considered a classic "workers' club".

Derby balance sheet

While Esteghlal has existed since 1945, Persepolis was not founded until 1963. Because the new club initially played with moderate success in the third division, it was not until April 5, 1968 before the two clubs faced each other for the first time. This encounter ended goalless.

So far there have been a total of 78 derbies, of which Esteghlal has won 23, while Persepolis has prevailed 19 times. 36 matches ended in a draw. Because Persepolis was able to book some high derby victories (like the 6-0 of September 6, 1973), the goal difference of 74:73 speaks for the "Reds". (As of January 18, 2014)

  3. Because there are different derby statistics, the derby statistics mentioned in the FIFA article The battle of Tehran were used. The article appeared before the derby held on February 3, 2010, which Persepolis won 2: 1 (because it refers to the fact that the previous six derbies all ended 1: 1; understandable from the results stated on Footballderbies.com as well as the there missing derbies from October 2, 2009, read in the RSSSF season article 2009/10 ) and cites a record of 66 games (except the first derby) with 20 wins from Esteghlal, 16 wins from Persepolis and before the “next 68th city derby” 30 draws with a goal difference of 66:62 in favor of Persepolis. Together with the 0-0 on April 5, 1968, there were 31 draws. Then there were (since 2010) a further eleven games: the eight derbies listed on Footballderbies.com until the end of 2013 (with the exception of the derby mentioned on May 5, 2013, which was attributed to a 3-1 win by Esteghlal; played on that day Persepolis won the cup final against Sepahan FC and can therefore not have played against Esteghlal on the same day, as listed on Footballderbies.com; see The Hazfi Cup 2012/13 on livescores.cc ) and the derby of January 17, 2014, the - like the previous three league derbys - ended goalless; see. Derby results 2011/12 to 2013/14 at goalwire.com , accessed June 19, 2014, and RSSSF season article 2013/14 . Adding these derbies results in a balance of 76 games with 22 wins for Esteghlal, 19 wins for Persepolis and 35 draws with a goal difference of 72:68 in favor of Persepolis. Taking into account two other derbies from 2011 listed in the English language Wikipedia (a cup game and a friendly game, see button on the left), the derby balance sheet mentioned in the article results.
