Esteghlal Tehran's team (2011/12 season)

The Esteghlal Tehran Football Club ( Persian باشگاه فوتبال استقلال تهران, Independence ), called Esteghlal , is an Iranian football club from the capital Tehran . Until the Islamic Revolution , the club was called Taj Tehran Football Club ( Persian باشگاه فوتبال تاج تهران, Crown ). With eight championship titles , six cup wins and two titles in the AFC Champions League , Esteghlal is one of the most popular and successful clubs in Iran and Asia, alongside arch-rivals Persepolis , against whom the Tehran derby will be played .

The club colors are blue and white and the club has two gold stars on its jerseys for the two titles in the AFC Champions League.

The club plays its home games in the Azadi Stadium , which is also the home of Persepolis.

history

founding

The club was founded on September 24, 1945 by cyclists under the name Docharkhe Savaran ( Persian دوچرخه سواران, 'The Cyclists'). A year later, the club's football team, which had been created in the meantime, played its first game. Since then they have always played in the top league of Tehran and could already celebrate winning the Tehran championship in the 1949/50 season. In 1949 the name was changed to Taj , in German crown .

1950s and 1960s

On March 6, 1950, Esteghlal played his first game under the name Taj in the Tehran Provinincial League (Tehran Championship) in front of 20,000 spectators in the Amjadieh Stadium (now Shahid Shiroudi Stadium) against city rivals Shahin FC. Together with Shahin, Daraei and PAS Tehran , Iranian football was then dominated in the 1950s and 1960s. In the seasons 1951/52, 1956/57, 1957/58, 1959/60, 1961/62, 1963/64, 1969/70 one was the winner of the Tehran championship, which was regarded as the highest national league.

Strong 1970s

The 70s were not only a successful time for the club, but also the years in which Taj (Esteghlal) managed to establish itself as one of the most popular and strongest teams in Iran and Asia.

Taj after winning the Asian Champion Club Tournament in 1970

In 1970 Taj (Esteghlal) became the first Iranian team to win an international competition. In the final of the Asian Champion Club Tournament , the forerunner of the AFC Champions League , thanks to goals from Gholam Vafakhah and Masoud Moeini, they beat Israeli representatives Hapoel Tel Aviv with 2-1 .

At the beginning of the 1970s, the Local League was the first league in which teams from outside Tehran could also participate. These included u. a. the now very popular clubs Tractor Sazi from Tabriz and Sepahan from Isfahan. Taj (Esteghlal) was able to win the first of his eight national championships to date in the Local League, thus laying the foundation for the successful 1970s. After they were able to prevail 2-1 against PAS Tehran in the final of the 1970/71 season , they failed a year later with third place and eight points behind Persepolis to defend their title in the Local League, which was played in the changed game mode.

After football became increasingly popular in Iran at the beginning of the 1970s, the association decided to introduce a national league, which should work on the model of European leagues. In 1973 the Takht Jamshid Cup was finally founded , in which teams from all over the country could take part. After 12 teams participated in the first two seasons, the league expanded from the 1975/76 season to 16 participating clubs. After Taj (Esteghlal) was runner-up behind Persepolis in the 1973/74 season, they were able to become Iranian champions the following year with two points ahead of their eternal competitor. Gholam Hossein Mazloumi was also the top scorer in the league , alongside Aziz Espandar from Malavan Anzali . However, when the Takht Jamshid Cup was enlarged to 16 participating teams for the following season, Taj (Esteghlal) did not get past 4th place until the revolution in the game years 1975/76, 1976/77 and 1977/78. The 1978/79 season could not be ended because of the Islamic Revolution. At that time, 12 match days, they finished 3rd in the table.

Furthermore, with goalkeeper Nasser Hejazi and striker Hassan Rowshan, two of the most important players in Iranian football were brought out and they were also able to win the Hazfi Cup in the 1976/77 season . In the final, they defeated Homa FC 2-0 and made the first of six cup wins perfect.

Revolution and wartime

In the course of the Islamic Revolution , the name of the association was changed from Taj to Esteghlal . Since symbols or names that clearly identified with the royal family were banned after the revolution, the association wanted to express its neutrality by renaming it to Esteghlal, which means independence in German .

Due to the Iran-Iraq war, society's interest in football waned. The Takht Jamshid Cup was discontinued and there was no national league until the 1989/90 season. Attempts to reintroduce a national league failed due to a lack of support and the money problems of almost all clubs. The Tehran Provincial League champion was therefore considered the Iranian champion. Thanks to the return of Nasser Hejazi and Hassan Rowshan , Esteghlal won the Tehran Provincial League twice between 1980 and 1990 (1983/84, 1985/86).

In the 1987/88 season, the league was supplemented for the first time since the war began with teams outside Tehran . The league was named Shahrivar League that season . Esteghlal was only fourth in the table with 28 points, 12 points behind Persepolis , Daraei and Ekbatan.

Qods League and international title

A first real national championship after the Takht Jamshid Cup was played again in 1989/1990. The 22 teams participating in the Qods League were divided into two groups of 11 teams each. The group first and second in both groups qualified for the semifinals. Initially, Esteghlal had won group B ahead of Daraei with 15 wins in 20 games and a total of 33 points. Then they prevailed confidently against Malavan Anzali in the semifinals . A 0-0 in the first leg was followed by an easy 4-0 second leg win. In the final they defeated Persepolis 2-1. The goals were scored by Abbas Sorkhab in the 47th and Samad Marfavi in the 74th minute. Persepolis had taken the lead in the 8th minute after a goal from Reza Abediyan. After the first edition, however, it was decided not to continue the Qods League with this mode. Therefore, the clubs played again in the regional leagues in the 1990/91 season. Persepolis was the winner of the Tehran Provinicial League in 1990/91 .

By defeating Persepolis, Esteghlal was eligible to start the following season for the Asian Club Championship, today's Asian Champions League, and was able to retract the second title after 1970. After beating Al-Sadd SC from Qatar 2-1 in the back and forth game , they met in the following group stage on April 25 Sports Club from North Korea , Mohammedan SC from Bangladesh and Thai representative Bangkok Bank FC . Around April 25 there was a 2-1 win in the first group game. This was followed by a 2-0 win over Bangkok Bank and a 1-1 draw against Mohammedan SC in the last game. With a 2-0 victory in the semifinals against Pelita Jaya they qualified for the final against Liaoning Whowin from China , which thanks to the goals of Reza Hasanzadeh and Samad Marfavi could be won with 2-1.

Azadegan League

The Qods League was in memory of the Iranian prisoners of war of the first Gulf War in Azadegan League renamed. Between 1991 and 2001, the Iranian champions were played in it, but it was always a club from or in the immediate vicinity of Tehran . PAS Tehran secured the title in the first two seasons , although the game mode was different in the first two years of the Azadegan League. In the 1991/92 season, 12 teams played in a league through home and away games from the Iranian champions. Esteghlal reached the runner-up here with two points behind PAS Tehran.

For the 1992/93 season, the league was divided into two groups of 8 teams each. Esteghlal was able to make 3rd place in Group A, but still had to relegate. In the following season they were therefore not represented in the Azadegan League. Esteghlal was able to reach the ascent directly. After playing in a uniform league with 14 teams again in 1993/94 and Saipa was crowned Iranian champion for the first time, the league was again divided into two groups for the 1994/95 game year, this time into groups of 12 teams each. Saipa was able to defend its title by beating Esteghlal 1-0 in the final. Previously, the Blues from Tehran had qualified behind their eventual opponent in the final with 27 points in Group A for the semi-finals against Persepolis . The first leg had to be abandoned when the score was 2-2 after Persepolis supporters stormed the field in 88 minutes after equalizing. The association then rated the game 3-0 in favor of Esteghlal. The second leg was played on neutral ground in Bandar Abbas . A 0-0 was enough for the final against Saipa, which was only lost in extra time.

In the playing years 1995/96, 1996/97, 1997/98 and 1998/99, the league was played with 16 clubs in the classic league format. Esteghlal was third in the 1995/96 season behind Persepolis and Bahman with 51 points and was also able to win the Hazfi Cup by being victorious in the final against Bargh Shiraz with 3-1 (first leg) and 2-0 (second leg). After only finishing sixth in the table a year later, they became champions of the Azadegan League in the 1997/98 season. As an Iranian champion you qualified for the Asian Club Championship the following season.

The 1998/99 game year was only partially successful for the club from a national perspective. The runner-up was achieved, but 12 points behind arch rivals Persepolis. In the Hazfi Cup, too, the Reds had to admit defeat with 1-2 in the final. From an international perspective, however, things went well for the capital city club. In the Asian Club Championship they reached the final against Júbilo Iwata . In front of 125,000 spectators in the Azadi Stadium , however, they had to admit defeat to the Japanese with 1-2.

The last two years of the Azadegan League were also dominated by the two big capital city clubs. Persepolis was in 1999/00 in the 14-team league with seven points ahead of Esteghlal champion, while Esteghlal was able to prevail a year later in a league of 12 with four points ahead of Persepolis. In 2000 they also won the Hazfi Cup again. In the final against Bahman, the goals of Mohammad Navazi (45th and 57th minute) and Ali Latifi (82nd minute) marked the third cup victory in the club's history.

Iran Pro League

The establishment of a professional league was decided in 2001 by the Iranian Football Association and should ensure a higher quality of the players. In 2001 the Iran Pro League (IPL) was founded and with it the professional status in Iran was introduced. In the first three seasons the league consisted of only 14 teams. For the 2004/05 season, the league was then enlarged by two more teams, before the decision was made to let 18 teams play for the title from the 2007/08 season. Since the 2013/14 season, 16 teams have been playing for the title of the top Iranian league again. The first championship went to Persepolis one point ahead of Esteghlal . Esteghlal led the table until the last matchday before Persepolis, but then lost to Malavan Anzali away with 0-1 and had to leave the championship to the rival, who at the same time defeated Fajr Sepasi with 1-0. The season was not untitled for Esteghlal. In the final of the Hazfi Cup , last year's winner Fajr Sepasi was beaten 2-1 in the first leg. Then a 2-2 win in the second leg was enough.

The 2002/03 season was one of the weakest years ever for Esteghlal. After only finishing ninth in the league and also being eliminated as a cup defender in the round of 16 against Sepahan , the collaboration with the German coach Roland Koch, who had been signed up before the season, was ended after just one year.

Ghalenoei era

Amir Ghalenoei

After the weak year before and the end of the collaboration with Koch , Amir Ghalenoei, one of the most famous players in the club's history, was signed as the new coach. Under Ghalenoei they were runner- up in the 2003/04 season, two points behind champions PAS Tehran, and also reached the cup final against Sepahan , which they lost (2-3 and 0-2).

The league was increased to 16 teams for the 2004/05 season and with Foolad was the first time a club from the province of Khuzestan Iranian champions. 64 points ahead of Zob Ahan (58 points) were enough to win the title for the first time. Esteghlal also scored 58 points, but was only third in the table due to the poorer goal difference and thus missed the AFC Champions League . With Reza Enayati you could at least provide the best scorer in the league. He was the top scorer for the second time with 20 goals after moving from Aboumoslem .

In the 2005/06 season Esteghlal was first under the direction of Ghalenoei Iranian champions. Together with PAS Teheran, they fought an exciting race for the championship. With two doubles by Enayati and Akbarpour on the last matchday against Bargh Shiraz , they were able to keep the championship lead and celebrate the title in front of 100,000 fans in front of 100,000 fans in the home Azadi Stadium . Ghalenoei himself decided to leave the club at the end of the season and take up the job of national coach.

League problems

After Ghalenoei left the club, it was decided again to fill the post of head coach with a previous player of the club. Samad Marfavi was introduced as the new coach for the 2006/07 season. Marfavi had previously headed Esteghlal's youth department for six years. The hoped for success did not materialize, however. The season ended in 4th place and in the summer of 2007 it was decided not to continue the collaboration with Marfavi.

For the 2007/08 season, Esteghlal signed the club legend Nasser Hejazi as the new coach. However, he had to vacate his post after a weak start to the season and only five wins in 14 games. For the rest of the season, Firouz Karimi took over his duties. Karimi was able to win the Hazfi Cup at the end of the season, which is why the club was able to qualify for the AFC Champions League despite a miserable 13th place in the league .

Return of Ghalenoei

The return of Amir Ghalenoei turned out to be a stroke of luck for the club. Esteghlal was Iranian champion for the first time after 2005/06 in the 2008/09 season. After the last game day of the season, Esteghlal and Zob Ahan were tied at the top with 66 points each. The better goal difference of 70:34 by Esteghlal to 58:42 by Zob Ahan decided the championship in favor of the capital club. In the AFC Champions League , however, it was less successful. With only four points in six games, Esteghlal was eliminated in the group stage.

After the season, however, Ghalenoei moved to Sepahan and Esteghlal again hired Samad Marfavi as a coach. While Ghalenoei was champion with Sepahan, Marfavi's protégés landed on position 3 in the table. But things went much better in the Champions League than in the previous year. Behind Al-Gharafa from Qatar they finished second in Group A and thus reached the second round, which ended after a 2-3 defeat against Al-Shabab from Saudi Arabia .

For the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons Parviz Mazloomi was the club's head coach. Michael Henke also worked for Esteghlal in the 2011/12 season . He acted as an assistant coach and technical advisor to the club. Both years under Mazloomi went reasonably well for Esteghlal. The 2010/11 season finale was again exciting and Sepahan was the champion with 66 points ahead of Esteghlal (65 points) and city rival Zob Ahan (63 points). Also in the 2011/12 season, Esteghlal narrowly failed in the championship. With 66 points tied to Tractor Sazi and again one point less than Sepahan, they finished the season in third place. Mazloomi also won their sixth cup . In the final in Shiraz , Shahin Buschehr was defeated 4-1 on penalties. In the AFC Champions League, under the direction of Mazloomi in 2011, they just missed the advancement before they survived the group phase in 2012 and had to admit defeat 0-2 in the round of 16 at Sepahan.

Esteghlal fans celebrate the 2013 championship

In the summer of 2012, Ghalenoei hired for the third time as head coach at Esteghlal. Esteghlal was again Iranian champion after three championship years from Sepahan and prevailed with 67 points ahead of the renewed runner-up Tractor Sazi (65 points) from Tabriz . On matchday 32, Esteghlal and Sepahan faced each other in the Azadi . With a win, Sepahan could have overtaken Esteghlal again, but after Moharram Navidkia's opening goal in stoppage time (94 minutes), an own goal by Mohsen Irannejad equalized. Since Sepahan lost 1-2 to Damash Gilan on the following match day , Esteghlal's 1-0 win at Foolad with a penalty from Javad Nekounam was enough . Things also went very well for the club in the AFC Champions League . After strong performances it was only over in the semifinals against FC Seoul .

The 2013/14 game year was extremely defensive and exciting at the same time. Foolad achieved 36 goals for the title, while Malavan Anzali scored most of the season in seventh place with just 40 goals. On the last day of the match, apart from Foolad, Esteghlal, Persepolis, Sepahan and Naft Tehran were also champions. Foolad kept the championship lead with a 1-0 at Gostaresh Foulad Tabriz and became champions for the second time. Esteghlal, on the other hand, lost at home starting from 2nd place 1-3 against cup winner Tractor Sazi and lost a Champions League place with 5th place. In the AFC Champions League , the club got off to a weak start and later did not get beyond third place in Group A. In the Hazfi Cup they were eliminated in the semifinals after a surprising home defeat against Mes Kerman .

Stadion

Interior of the stadium

Esteghlal plays his home games at the Azadi Stadium ( Persian ورزشگاه آزادی, Varzeshgah Azadi ), called Azadi . It is located in the west of the Iranian capital Tehran . Built for the 1974 Asian Games , since its opening, it has been used not only for the Esteghlal games but also as a venue for the games of Persepolis and the international matches of the Iranian national soccer team .

The stadium is part of the Azadi sports complex in Tehran and initially had a capacity of 95,225 seats. The stadium was only sold out when there were 100,000 spectators in the Azadi. Now a capacity of 78,116 (number of seats) is also given. The stadium is also known for its incredible atmosphere when games are sold out. At the Tehran Derby and other very important games in the league and the AFC Champions League , the stadium is usually sold out or well filled.

In 2002 and 2003 the stadium was extensively renovated. In addition to the installation of new seats, the interior was also extensively modernized. So the lawn was replaced and a lawn heating installed. In 2004 a new scoreboard was installed in the stadium, which with a size of 300 square meters is one of the largest in the world.

Fans and rivalries

The club has the most supporters in Iranian football after its rival Persepolis . The club not only has supporters from Tehran , but also many fans from other parts of the country, Afghanistan and the region around the Persian Gulf . Esteghlal is also called "Taj", "Crown of Asia", "SS" or "The Blue" by the fans.

In addition to the strong and intense rivalry with city rivals Persepolis, against whom the Tehran derby is being contested, the club also rivals other clubs. These are the clubs Tractor Sazi Tabriz and Sepahan , which also have a very large following.
