Javad Nekounam ( Persian جواد نکونام/ dʒa'vad 'nekunam /) (born September 7, 1980 in Rey ) is an Iranian former national soccer player .

Career

Youth and club career

Nekounam played for Iranian club Saipa FC in his youth . His breakthrough came with his move to the then top Iranian club Pas Tehran , with whom he became Iranian champion in the 2003/04 season . He left Pas Tehran after seven successful years and signed a contract with Al Wahda in the United Arab Emirates .

In January 2006, he then moved to league rivals Al-Sharjah . Nekounam's good and consistent performance in the UAE professional league made him an object of desire. Some well-known European football clubs including 1. FC Kaiserslautern , Tottenham Hotspur and CA Osasuna wanted to sign him. The Spanish first division club Osasuna was awarded the contract . Already in the first season 2006/07 at CA Osasuna Nekounam was able to prove his skills. He quickly became a regular player and the crowd favorite. Although Nekounam was out due to injury for a long time in the 2007/08 season and only came to two short appearances, Osasuna offered him a contract extension until 2011, which he accepted. After the 2011/12 season, Nekounam moved to the Iranian top club Esteghlal Tehran . He signed a two-year contract there. After moving to Kuwait for half a year in 2014 to al Kuwait Kaifan , he returned to Osasuna in August 2014 . He signed there for two years.

National team

Nekounam was first called on May 31, 2000 in the squad of the Iranian national team.

His biggest success so far is third place at the 2004 Asian Cup , where he scored two goals. He took part in the 2006 World Cup in Germany and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
