The Sharjah FC ( Arabic نادي الشارقة الثقافي الرياضي, DMG Nādī š-Šāriqa aṯ-ṯaqāfī ar-riyāḍī ) is an association from Sharjah , United Arab Emirates , which was founded in 1966. The club currently plays in the country's highest league, the UAE Arabian Gulf League . The club plays its home games in the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. With 8 cup wins, the club is the country's record holder.

Club history

The club was founded in 1966 under the name al-Orouba Club . In 1974 they merged with al-Khaleej (which was later re-established). Sharjah Club has been officially registered as Sharjah Sports and Culture Club since 1978 . The club went down in the history of football in the Emirates as the first ever champion in the UAE League . At the 1990 World Cup , most of the United Arab Emirates' national football team consisted of players from the Sharjah Club. A total of nine players from the club took part in the World Cup. In 2009 the club took part in the AFC Champions League , but has not yet won any of its group games. The club is eighth in the league. Due to the poor results, coach Toni Oliveira was sacked in April 2009. His successor until the end of the season is Abdul Wahab, who was only released from the Ajman Club in March .

At the beginning of May 2009 the club announced that they would withdraw from the 2009 AFC Champions League after only 4 match days in the group stage . The club was in the relegation battle at this point and wanted to focus on it. In July 2009, the AFC announced the penalty for the withdrawal. Accordingly, the club has to pay a total of 413,000 dollars and may not participate in the AFC Champions League in 2010 if they qualify. Since September 2011, the team has been coached by the Romanian Valeriu Tița , who replaced the Portuguese Carlos Azenha after his wife was diagnosed with cancer. In 2014, the Brazilian coach Paulo Bonamigo is in office.
