Al-Arabi (English 'Al-Arabi Sports Club , Arabic النادي العربي الرياضي, DMG an-Nādī al-ʿArabī ar-Riyāḍī ), also known as ' Al-Arabi Doha , is a professional football club from Doha ( Qatar ). The club currently plays in the country's highest league, the Qatar Stars League . The club plays its home games in the Grand Hamad Stadium. Many former stars and professional footballers have already played for Al-Arabi. Both Stefan Effenberg and Gabriel Batistuta ended their careers here. Since the club was founded in 1952, the championship has been won seven times.

history

The association was founded in 1952. In 1983 the club was able to win the national league for the first time in club history . Two years later they repeated this success by remaining unbeaten in the seven-team league after two legs and five points on pursuers Qatar SC .

The club's heyday was in the 1990s, when five championships were won from 1991 to 1997. In addition, the club reached the semi-finals of the Asian Cup Winners' Cup in the 1993/94 season and even the final of the AFC Champions League a year later . 2001 was the last time al-Arabi was runner-up. Since then, the club has struggled with many ups and downs. From 2003 to 2005 the German Wolfgang Sidka was the club's coach. Under him, the club attracted well-known players in Europe such as Gabriel Batistuta and Stefan Effenberg to Qatar. Although Sidka performed well with his team, it was not enough for a title. At the end of his first year with al-Arabi, Sidka was named Trainer of the Year in Qatar. From January 2009, another German, Uli Stielike , was the club's coach. Under him, the 2008/09 season ended in seventh place. In the following year, the improvement took place in third place. In 2009/10 the team reached the final of the Sheikh Jassim Cup . There they defeated Lekhwiya 1-0. The following year, this success was repeated under new coach Paulo Silas after they beat Umm-Salal SC 3-2 in the final .
