Taribo West (born March 26, 1974 in Lagos ) is a retired Nigerian football player .

Career

society

The central defender Taribo West began his professional career in 1993 with the French first division club AJ Auxerre under coach Guy Roux . During this time he quickly developed into one of the team's key players and Nigeria's national player . His most successful time was between 1997 and 1999 when he moved from Auxerre to the Italian Serie A at Inter Milan . In the very first year he won the UEFA Cup in the final against Lazio Rome .

As Italian runner-up, he took part in the UEFA Champions League the following year and failed in the quarter-finals at eventual winners Manchester United . After the end of the season he moved to local rivals AC Milan . At Milan, however, he was never really happy. He moved to Derby County in the English Premier League in November 2000 . Now Taribo West's wandering years began. For almost six months, from November 2001 until the end of the season, he played for 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the Bundesliga . He was then without a club for half a year before he was under contract with Partizan Belgrade from January 2003 to April 2004. After he went to Al-Arabi in Qatar in 2004/05 , he moved to England in the First Division at Plymouth Argyle at the beginning of the 2005/06 season , where he only stayed until the beginning of October 2005.

In 2007 he signed a contract with Paykan Tehran , which he broke after only one game due to unpunctual salary payments.

National team

In 1994 West was part of the Nigerian national team for the first time . Two years later he took part with her in the Summer Olympics, where she won the gold medal. In the preliminary round you only had to admit defeat to Brazil , but still moved happily into the next round, as three teams in Group D had six points. In the final they met another South American team. But they kept the upper hand against Argentina and prevailed 3-2. With the national team he then took part in the 1998 World Cup in France . Oddities

West moved in 2001 from Derby County to 1. FC Kaiserslautern. He said he was 27 years old. Just five months later he moved to the Serbian club Partizan Belgrade. There he stated to be 28. The ex-President of Belgrade, Zarko Zezevic, is quoted as saying that West must have been 40 years old: “He came to us when he was 28. We later found out that he was actually 40. But he still played well, so I have not regretted that he was with us. ”The significantly older age is said to have been determined during a sports medical examination. However, details were not given by the British newspaper Daily Mail . Therefore, these facts are to be viewed as questionable. West denies these allegations.
