Port Harcourt is a city in Nigeria with 2,596,000 inhabitants (as of 2015). It is the capital and at the same time one of 23 Local Government Areas in the state of Rivers .

geography

Port Harcourt is located in the south of the country in the Niger Delta . The rainfall is quite high in the rainy season.

history

The city, founded by the British in 1912 , was built on the tribal territory of the Ikwerre ( Igbo ) and the Ijaw . It is named after Lewis Vernon Harcourt, 1st Viscount Harcourt , the British Secretary of State for Colonial Affairs from 1910 to 1915.

In 1995 the writer and civil rights activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other defendants were executed in Port Harcourt , sparking violent international protests. Nigeria was excluded from the Commonwealth of Nations with immediate effect .

The city's recent history has been marked by violence. There were violent exchanges of fire between different groups and with the police. Dozens of people died in the process. A number of foreigners have also been kidnapped in Port Harcourt, including Germans.

economy

The city has an important overseas port for the region and is considered an oil city.

Air traffic

The international airport was closed after a fire since August 2007 and has been reopened to a limited extent since the beginning of 2008, and has been fully open again since May 2008. There are daily flights from Frankfurt (Main) to Port Harcourt with Lufthansa (from June 1, 2015 via Abuja ).
