Yvonne Anuli Orji (born December 2, 1983 in Port Harcourt , Nigeria ) is a Nigerian -American actress, best known for her role as Molly Carter from the series Insecure , for which she received an Emmy nomination in 2020 received.

life and career

Yvonne Orji was born in Port Harcourt, a metropolis on the south coast of Nigeria. Her parents later immigrated to the United States with her and her three older sons and settled in the state of Maryland . Her mother found a job as a nurse at Howard University Hospital . After moving and graduating, she studied health sciences at George Washington University , from which she graduated with a Masters. In 2009 she moved to New York City and began acting as a comedian , going against her parents' wishes into a medical profession. A little later, as an intern, she gained insight into the scriptwriting process for the production of the sitcom Love That Girl! . In that series she was seen in a guest role for the first time in 2011 as an actress in front of the camera. In 2014 she moved again, this time to Los Angeles on the West Coast and then worked as a screenwriter on a pilot episode that would later go into production under the title First Gen. Among others, were on the project Oprah Winfrey and David Gyasi as executive producers involved. The episode has not yet been published.

On the advice of actress Issa Rae , she auditioned for a role in the series Insecure in 2015 and was eventually cast for the role of Molly Carter in one of the leading roles. The series was first broadcast on HBO in 2016 and increased its popularity. For her portrayal in the fourth season, she received a nomination for the upcoming Primetime Emmy Awards 2020 in the category Best Supporting Actress - Comedy Series in July 2020 . In 2017 Orji appeared in two episodes of the Jane the Virgin series. In 2018 Orji appeared as Maya in the comedy film Night School . In 2019 she was seen on the sketch show A Black Lady Sketch Show , which was also broadcast on HBO. In 2020 she published the documentary Momma, I Made It , for which she traveled to her homeland in Nigeria, which she produced and wrote herself. The documentary was directed by Chris Robinson , who directed music videos for singers such as Alicia Keys , Mary J. Blige and Monica . In 2017 she met Chris Rock , with whom she performed at Total Black Out .

Orji lives in Los Angeles and is single. As a Christian , she refuses premarital intercourse for herself .
