Issa Rae (* 12. January 1985 in Los Angeles , California as Jo-Issa Rae Diop ) is an American actress , film producer , screenwriter and director . She became known in 2011 with the YouTube series The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, which she produced . In 2013 she created the television series Insecure for HBO . For her leading role in Insecure , she was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2017 and 2018 and an Emmy in 2018 and 2020 .

Life

Issa Rae was born as the daughter of a doctor from Senegal , her mother comes from Louisiana . The two met during a study trip to France . After a few moves, the parents and their five children settled in View Park-Windsor Hills . In 1988 they moved to Dakar , their father's hometown, and about two years later they returned to Windsor Hills.

Rae attended King / Drew Magnet High School of Medicine and Science , where she gained her first stage experience and participated in school performances. She then studied at the Stanford University African and African American studies in the major subject. She completed her studies in 2007. During her studies she began writing, among other things, they adapted School Daze from Spike Lee for the stage. She also produced the first videos for the video portal YouTube, founded in 2005 . After graduation, she received a scholarship from the Public Theater in New York City .

From 2011 she produced the Youtube series The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl , for which she wrote the script, directed and starred. Due to the success of the series, she received inquiries from various production companies and broadcasters, including in 2013 from HBO , for which she subsequently provided the concept for the Insecure series . The first season first aired in 2016, and in 2018 HBO commissioned the fourth season. Rae plays the main role of Issa Dee. For her portrayal in Insecure , she was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2017 and 2018 and an Emmy in 2018 and was honored in the category Best Actress in a Series - Comedy / Musical at the Satellite Awards 2018 .

In 2014, Forbes listed her as one of the 30 Under 30 in the Hollywood & Entertainment category . In 2015 she published her memoir , The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl , which landed on the New York Times bestseller list . In 2019, she became the second prominent voice for Google Assistant in the United States after John Legend . In 2020 she starred alongside Kumail Nanjiani in the film comedy The Lovebirds by Michael Showalter , published on Netflix , in the role of advertising woman Leilani.
