Michael Showalter (born June 17, 1970 in Princeton ) is an American comedian and actor . He is also a director , writer and producer of comedies and comedy series.

Life

Showalter is the son of literary scholars Elaine and English Showalter. His sister Vinca, who is four years older than him, is a speechwriter and as such was a. worked in the Clinton administration . In 1988 Showalter began studying at New York University . Showalter later moved to Brown University , where he graduated in 1992 .

Showalter became friends with David Wain at the beginning of his studies . Together with other fellow students , the two founded the sketch troupe The New Group , which became The State in 1992 . The following year, production of the first episodes of the MTV comedy series of the same name began , which was broadcast in January 1994. The station had previously produced a series with the group called You Wrote It, You Watch It , for which Showalter and other The State members wrote the scripts. Since 1997 Showalter, Wain and Michael Ian Black have also worked together as the sketch group Stella . This cooperation also resulted in a comedy series of the same name, which was broadcast on Comedy Central in 2005 .

From March 16, 1997 to April 19, 1998 Showalter achieved several supporting roles (“male Greek choir”) in the award-winning off-Broadway production of the world premiere of Paula Vogel's comedy How I Learned to Drive . Showalter made his debut as a director in 2005 with the film The Baxter , in which he also starred. His romantic comedy film The Big Sick , which Showalter presented at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2017 , has received numerous critical acclaim.

Showalter is married and had twins in 2011. He teaches screenwriting at New York University's Graduate School of Film .
