Age rating

In the USA, the film received an R rating from the MPAA , which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over. In Germany the film is FSK 6 . The statement of reasons for the release states: “Despite the serious aspects, the film is characterized by a predominantly cheerful atmosphere and told with empathy. Children of preschool age can be unsettled by individual dramatic moments and hospital scenes, but even 6-year-olds are able to deal with these aspects. Since the context opens up to them and the cheering passages and the humor of the comedy interludes provide distance and relief, they can process the film to the happy ending without being overwhelmed. "

Reviews and grossing results

The film has so far won over 98 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 8.3 out of a possible 10 points. In the context of the Golden Tomato Awards in 2017, the film emerged as the winner in the category Best Film Romance . For Brian Tallerico, a film critic of Roger Ebert , the film is the best romantic comedy in years. Scott Beggs of the nerdist says the film is overflowing with weird, awkward, sad and honest moments. John DeFore of The Hollywood Reporter sums it up: "A funny and tender love story from the middle of life."

Jens Balkenborg from epd Film describes The Big Sick as a romantic comedy that is also funny, sad, modest, clever and in many moments very truthful, and director Michael Showalter has made a pleasantly calm film out of Nanjiani's and Gordon's story, the one without artificially inflated climaxes flow completely unpretentiously and allow time for his characters. When she ends up in the intensive care unit sick months later and falls into a coma, the film develops into a character study and gets a whole new drive, says Balkenborg, and suddenly the focus is on the story of the actually impossible encounter between Kumail and Emily's parents Beth and Terry : "The camera carefully and with a lot of empathy catches glances, hints and long conversations between the unequal trio and slowly complex people with their own quirks and problems emerge from an initial protective position, friendships develop."

Günter H. Jekubzik of the Augsburger Allgemeine says about Kumail Nanjiani that you have to laugh, cry, sympathize and fear when he plays himself as an unsuccessful and in love stand-up comedian. About the two supporting actors who play Emily's mother and father, Jekubzik says: "A brilliant Holly Hunter and Ray Romano put this long-established couple with so much character and rough edges that they could claim the leading roles."

Sabienna Bowman from bustle.com saw a good chance for the film to be considered at the awards ceremony of the following year shortly after the 2017 Academy Awards .

The worldwide revenue from cinema screenings so far amounts to approximately 56.3 million US dollars. The film recorded 102,656 visitors in Germany.
