The World Cinema Film Distribution GmbH , headquartered in Feldafing and Leipzig , is a German distribution company for German and international films , which in 2012 by Michael Kölmel and Dietmar Güntsche was founded.

history

Michael Kölmel and his brother Rainer Kölmel founded Kinowelt AG in 1984 , which went bankrupt in 2001. The successor company Kinowelt GmbH, which was subsequently built up by Michael Kölmel, experienced rapid success with audience favorites such as The English Patient or The Journey of the Penguins . In 2008, Kölmel sold Kinowelt GmbH to the French film company Studiocanal , a subsidiary of the Canal + Group, and left the management. Kölmel currently runs several other media companies, such as the publishing and bookselling company Zweiausendeins and the film production company Film Aufbau Leipzig. Dietmar Güntsche , who is also co-owner and managing director of the Munich-based production company Neue Bioskop Film, is co-owner and partner in the world cinema management . Weltkino plans to develop its own productions through the latter .

Weltkino Filmverleih GmbH, founded by Kölmel in December 2012, started work in 2013 with the acquisition of the publishing rights for the French film Jung & Schön from François Ozon . Within three years the distribution portfolio expanded to more than 50 film titles. The focus and the content is on the acquisition of winning films from major European A-film festivals such as the Berlin International Film Festival , the Cannes International Film Festival and the Venice Biennale . The program is supplemented by commercially oriented feature films and German-language film productions.

Since 2018 Weltkino has been part of a research cooperation with the Marketing Center of the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster (WWU) under the title Movie Success Lab , aiming to "face the current upheaval in the cinema and film landscape". The competencies from research and practice are to be bundled through joint, interdisciplinary projects. Students of the MCM, under the guidance of experts from the marketing department of Weltkino, will have the opportunity to help develop and evaluate marketing strategies for current feature film productions and releases by the distributor.

Since 2019, Weltkino Filmverleih has been donating the € 10,000 Golden Dove in the German Long Documentary and Animated Film Competition at the DOK Festival in Leipzig .

According to the 2018 annual financial statements, Weltkino Filmverleih has twenty-one employees in Leipzig and Munich .

The company is a member of the AG Verleih . Michael Kölmel is also a member of the executive board there .
