Winter Sleep (Original title: Kış Uykusu ) is a Turkish feature film by Nuri Bilge Ceylan from 2014. The drama, which is set in Cappadocia , was awarded the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival .

action

The protagonist of Hibernation is the former actor Aydın, who runs a hotel in the Anatolian province, writes columns for the local newspaper and has been planning a book on the history of Turkish theater for a long time without ever having written a sentence. He is wealthy and educated, but treats the people around him with condescension and teaching. Aydın is too taken with himself to notice that he is met with disapproval. But with the onset of winter, the conflicts with those around him became evident.

The smoldering conflict with a family in need, who can no longer afford the rent for one of Aydin's houses, interests him only insofar as it stimulates him to philosophical treatises on poverty, culture and morality. More and more he gets involved in endless arguments about justice, guilt and morals with his sister Necla and his young wife Nihal, who are both dependent on him, despair of their senseless existence in the loneliness of the province and blame him for it, but do not dare to take the step into a life of their own. Aydın thwarts his wife's attempt to get involved in charity in the neighborhood after she explained to him that she did not want him to participate.

Disaffected, he pretends to go to Istanbul. In fact, he slips into the area with his old farmer friend, Suavi. Meanwhile, Nihal offers the impoverished family a lot of money to pay off their debts. However, the head of the family, Ismail, believes that this is just a cleansing of her guilty conscience and throws the money into the fire with offended pride. Nihal bursts into tears in despair.

During a drinking session by Aydın, Suavi and the village teacher Levent, it turns out that these two people are lonely and disappointed with life. Aydın then returns to his sister and his wife. In an inner monologue he recognizes the futility and hopelessness of his existence. At the end you can see Aydın starting to write his book.

criticism

Susanne Ostwald wrote in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung about the awarding of the Golden Palm to Winterschlaf : "The highly intelligent conversation piece has brilliant dialogues, excellent actors and is staged with great confidence."

Hannah Pilarczyk wrote in Der Spiegel : “With his majestic three-hour drama Winter Sleep , Nuri Bilge Ceylan confirms his reputation as a master of the subtle morals of his Turkish homeland. [...] Together with his wife Ebru, who co-wrote the script here as with 'Once Upon A Time', Ceylan triumphs as one of the outstanding dialogue writers of his time. "

Screen International's Dan Fainaru found the cast of Hibernation played with such precision and feeling that even Bergman would have applauded.

Michael Sennhauser commented on SRF Online : “ Winter Sleep is a surprisingly talkative film by Ceylan's standards. Morality, justice and right action are constantly negotiated. And the opposite happens all the time. […] Winter Sleep is once again one of those films whose cruel beauty lingers long enough to make it a part of one's own life ”. Michael Kienzl wrote in Critic.de: “Nuri Bilge Ceylan dedicates himself to complex power relations in finely orchestrated conflict symphonies. [...] Again and again Ceylan finds a way to resolve stereotypical conflicts in an exciting way. "

Epd Film praised hibernation . For their “bitter, very slowly unfolding character study”, the two authors “were inspired by the works of Chekhov . The epic breadth as well as the depth with which they analyze power structures "but also breathes the spirit of Shakespeare's royal dramas". The “almost surgical precision with which the isolation of people within their relationships is revealed bit by bit like with a scalpel”, reminds Ingmar Bergman .

Awards

In addition to the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, Winterschlaf also won the FIPRESCI award there . In the same year, three nominations for the European Film Award (film, direction, screenplay) followed.
