Cannes International Film Festival 2014
The 67th Cannes International Film Festival took place from May 14th to 25th, 2014. The film festival opened with Olivier Dahan's biography Grace of Monaco , which ran out of competition. In protest against the film, the Princely House of Monaco did not attend the opening of the Cannes Film Festival. The closing film of the film festival was the feature film For a Fistful of Dollars by Sergio Leone, restored in 4K2K .
This year the New Zealand director Jane Campion was the president of the international jury, which awards the Palme d' Or . Due to the European elections on May 25th, the festival winners were announced a day earlier than usual. The moderator of the opening ceremony and the award gala was the French actor Lambert Wilson .
The Golden Palm went to the film Winterschlaf (English festival title: Winter Sleep , original title: Kış Uykusu ) by Nuri Bilge Ceylan , who was also a favorite in the run-up.

The festival poster showed the Italian actor Marcello Mastroianni in a scene from the film 8½ by Federico Fellini from 1963. In the film, he sees Claudia Cardinales film character Claudia, pulling his sunglasses down slightly and looking over the glasses. The film ran out of competition at the film festival in 1963. The design of the poster comes from Hervé Chigioni and Gilles Frappier .

The New Zealand director Jane Campion was introduced at the beginning of January 2014 as the successor to last year's jury president Steven Spielberg . Campion first took part in the Cannes Film Festival in 1986 with a short film. She is the only female director to have won the Palme d'Or: She received the 1993 award for Das Piano . For her short film Peel she also won a Golden Palm for Best Short Film in 1986 and is the only person to date to have received two such awards.

The official competition program was announced by the festival organizers on April 17th, 2014. A total of 18 films competed for the Palme d'Or. Germany was not represented in the competition; Fatih Akın withdrew from The Cut shortly before the films were announced; Newly completed works by Andreas Dresen ( When we were dreaming ) and Christian Petzold ( Phoenix ) were not taken into account either. Wim Wenders , who was co-director of the documentary Das Salz der Erde in the side series Un Certain Regard , criticized the selection policy for German films a few days before the festival began.
For the competition for the Golden Palm for the best feature film, productions could be submitted that had been completed within the twelve months before the start of the festival, had not previously participated in an international festival, had not yet been commercially exploited outside their country of origin and neither on television nor on television Internet were presented. The deadline for submitting films in the Palme d'Or competition was March 10, 2014.

Un Certain Regard
In the series Un Certain Regard (German “A certain look”) works by less well-known filmmakers are shown, which will be awarded a prize worth 30,000 euros. In 2014, the jury was headed by the Argentine director Pablo Trapero . Other jury members were the director of the Criterion Collection Peter Becker, the Norwegian-Swedish actress Maria Bonnevie , the French actress Géraldine Pailhas and the director, screenwriter and producer Moussa Touré from Senegal .
The series included 20 films. The opening film of the series was the French contribution Party Girl by Marie Amachoukeli , Claire Burger and Samuel Theis .
Short film competition
The jury of the short film competition was headed by the Iranian director and screenwriter Abbas Kiarostami . Other jury members were the French director, actress and screenwriter Noémie Lvovsky , the Brazilian director Daniela Thomas , director Mahamat-Saleh Haroun from Chad and the Norwegian director Joachim Trier . The jury decided on the award of the Golden Palm for the best short film.

Cinéfondation
For the Cinéfondation series, launched in 1998, short films from around the world are selected, including both animation and real-life films. The program is aimed at film students. The short film jury led by Abbas Kiarostami acted as the jury and awarded the three Cinéfondation prizes.

Semaine de la critique
In parallel to the award of the Golden Palm, the Semaine de la critique , which has existed since 1962 (until 2007 Semaine internationale de la critique ), is dedicated to discovering new talent. Organized by the Syndicat français de la critique de cinéma , only first films or second works by young directors compete. In the past, the competition consisted of seven feature films and seven short film works, which have been awarded various prizes since 1990. The “International Critics' Week” is accompanied by special screenings of numerous short films.

Quinzaine des réalisateurs
The side series Quinzaine des Réalisateurs (German: "Two weeks of directors") was launched in 1969 based on the May riots that had taken place a year earlier and is organized by the Société des réalisateurs de films (SRF). Feature films (documentaries and feature films) as well as a large number of short films from all over the world will be shown without a prize being awarded.
The SRF honorary award, the Carosse d'or , went posthumously in 2014 to the French director Alain Resnais . The opening film of the series was girl gang with Karidja Touré , Assa Sylla and Lindsay Karamoh .

Caméra d'Or
The Caméra d'Or (“Golden Camera”) has been awarded since 1978 for the best debut film by a director, regardless of which section he is represented in. The 2014 international jury was chaired by the French director and actress Nicole Garcia . She was supported by jury members Richard Anconina (actor), Lisa Nesselson (critic), Sophie Grassin (journalist and film critic), Philippe von Leeuw (Belgian cameraman), Gilles Gaillard (director of Mikros Image) and Héléna Klotz (director).
