The 61st Cannes International Film Festival took place from May 14th to 25th, 2008. The film festival opened with Fernando Meirelle's drama The City of the Blind (original title: Blindness ) and ended with Barry Levinson's tragic comedy What Just Happened? that was shown outside of the competition. The French contribution Entre les murs by Laurent Cantet was awarded the main prize, the Palme d'Or .

International competition

Competition jury

On January 3, 2008, the American Sean Penn was presented as the successor to last year's jury president Stephen Frears . According to the artistic director of the film festival, Thierry Frémaux, the US government-critical actor and director stands for “independent American cinema” as well as a “vision of America that we like” Penn himself was delighted about the task of head of the jury, as he did in the official press release and suggested the presentation of Alison Thompson's documentary The Third Wave , which covers the 2004 tsunami disaster . In his opinion, a new generation of young filmmakers has been established in recent years and an increase in provocative and imaginative films can be observed. According to Penn, the Cannes Film Festival has always been the “epicenter of these discoveries” . Penn most recently attracted attention with his directorial work Into the Wild (2007).

Penn was assisted by eight judges. It was almost exclusively filmmakers:

The jury, which originally consisted of seven members, was expanded to include Balibar and Satrapi on April 30, 2008, after the international competition had been expanded to include additional films. Satrapi was represented in last year's competition with her own comic adaptation Persepolis and received the jury's prize.

Competitors for the Golden Palm

The other jury members as well as the official program were presented on May 23, 2008 at a press conference in Paris. The participation of the director Clint Eastwood , who was represented for the fifth time in the competition for the Golden Palm with his mystery thriller The Stranger Son, was already considered certain . The new films 24 City and My Magic by Asian directors Jia Zhangke (winner of the Golden Lion 2006) and Eric Khoo, respectively , were expected in the competition before the official announcement .

After criticism arose in recent years that American productions had dominated the film festival, this year traditionally most of the film productions came from Europe (8 films), followed by Latin America and the United States (4 each) and Asia (3). The field of participants was supplemented by contributions from Israel, Canada and Turkey. Ten of the directors were represented for the first time in the competition for the Palme d'Or, including the renowned screenwriter Charlie Kaufman . The American celebrates his directorial debut with Synecdoche, New York , in which Philip Seymour Hoffman can be seen as a theater director. Three of the filmmakers represented in the competition had already been honored with the main prize in Cannes in the past: the German Wim Wenders (1984 for Paris, Texas ), the American Steven Soderbergh (1989 for sex, lies and video ) and the Belgian brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (1999 for Rosetta; 2005 for Das Kind ). A historic victory would have been the awarding of the Drama Le Silence de Lorna by the Dardenne brothers, in which the still relatively unknown actress Arta Dobroshi takes the title role. So far, no director has triumphed three times in Cannes.

Wim Wenders was represented in the competition for the Golden Palm for the ninth time, more often than any other German director (he made his debut in Cannes in 1976 with the drama Im Lauf der Zeit ). In his new film Palermo Shooting , which he produced again in Europe after years, Campino , front man of the German rock band Die Toten Hosen , plays a successful photographer who gets into a life crisis. This leads him from Düsseldorf to Palermo, where he is pursued by a mysterious shooter.

One of the co-favorites was Steven Soderbergh's four-hour film biography Che, which consists of the two parts The Argentine and Guerrilla . Both films, which the director was able to finish in time, portray different episodes from the life of the Cuban revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara (played by Benicio del Toro ). The Argentine takes place in 1956 and is dedicated to the struggle of Che Guevara and Fidel Castro against the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista . Guerrilla settled in New York eight years later , where Che Guevara plans to address the United Nations . In the presence of Soderbergh movies that originated from Argentina Posts La mujer sin cabeza by Lucrecia Martel (member of the main jury 2006) and Leonera of Pablo Trapero , and Linha de Passe by Brazilian Walter Salles Charlotte Higgins watched by the British newspaper The Guardian , a Festival that in 2008 mainly focuses on Latin American themes. The Brazilian Fernando Meirelles also received an invitation to the competition for The City of the Blind . The drama starring Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo is a film adaptation of the novel of the same name by José Saramago . In contrast, a British film was not included in the competition for the second time in a row.

France, whose last victory was in 1987, was represented in the competition with three film productions. In addition to Philippe Garrel's La frontière de l'aube and Entre les murs by Laurent Cantet , who ultimately won the competition, Arnaud Desplechin , among others, had hopes for the main prize. In his tragicomic family film Un conte de Noël , the Frenchman was able to fall back on such well-known names as Catherine Deneuve , her daughter Chiara Mastroianni , Mathieu Amalric and Emmanuelle Devos . Italy, represented by Matteo Garrones Gomorra and Paolo Sorrentinos Il Divo , came up for two competition entries . Garrone filmed Roberto Saviano 's bestseller of the same name, which is dedicated to the Neapolitan crime syndicate Camorra . Sorrentino took on the life of Giulio Andreotti . The seven-time Prime Minister of Italy is also said to have ties to the Mafia. The Italian actor Toni Servillo plays the leading role in both productions .

After Persepolis , an animated film was again represented in the competition this year. The Israeli director Ari Folman deals with Waltz with Bashir with the massacre of Sabra and Shatila in 1982. Folman himself speaks of his semi-autobiographical work as a "documentary film in cartoon clothing" .

Outside of the competition, Steven Spielberg's adventure film Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull , Woody Allen's romantic comedy Vicky Cristina Barcelona and the animated film Kung Fu Panda celebrated their world premieres. Spielberg's film follows on from the successful Indiana Jones trilogy of the 1980s, in which Harrison Ford will slip into the role of the title hero again. Spielberg himself last visited the festival in the 1980s, where ET - The Extra Terrestrial (1982) and The Color Purple (1985) had their world premieres. In his film, shot in Barcelona, Woody Allen tells the story of a painter (played by Javier Bardem ) who starts an affair with two American tourists. In addition to Penélope Cruz and Rebecca Hall , the American actress Scarlett Johansson , who Woody Allen had already used in his previous films Match Point (2005) and Scoop (2006), takes on one of the leading female roles . The animated film Kung Fu Panda, on the other hand, focuses on a giant panda bear who dreams of becoming a famous kung fu fighter. Well-known actors such as Jack Black , Jackie Chan , Dustin Hoffman and Lucy Liu were able to be won over for the original voices of the production from DreamWorks Animation ( Shrek - The daring hero , Madagascar ) .

As part of the Cannes Classics line-up , a selection of films was shown at this year's film festival that did not premiere in the competition for the 21st edition of the festival in 1968. This year the film festival was canceled prematurely due to the May riots in Paris . The dramas Peppermint Frappé and I love you, I love you by Carlos Saura and Louis Malle , as well as Alexander Sarchi's Tolstoy film adaptation of Anna Karenina with Tatjana Samoilowa as the heroine, were shown. The series opened with a restored version of Max Ophüls ' Lola Montez (1955), which was realized with the assistance of the Cinémathèque française .

The American filmmaker Quentin Tarantino , 1994 winner of the Golden Palm for Pulp Fiction , held a “Cinema Master Class” during the film festival in which he discussed his work as a filmmaker and screenwriter. In doing so, he succeeded his fellow directors Martin Scorsese , Stephen Frears , Wong Kar-Wai , Nanni Moretti and Sydney Pollack , who had given insight into their work at the film festival in recent years.

Europe Day and awarding of the Palm of Honor

On May 19, 2008, Europe Day of the Cannes International Film Festival took place for the sixth time . As in previous years, the culture ministers of the EU member states and EU Commission President José Manuel Barroso met in Cannes to discuss funding for European film. The patron of the event was the Romanian director Cristian Mungiu , whose film won the Palme d'Or for 4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days last year.

On the evening of Europe Day, the 99-year-old Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira was awarded a Golden Palm for his life's work.

Cinéfondation

For the Cinéfondation series, launched in 2005, seventeen short films from fifteen different countries were selected, including both animation and real- life films . The short film debut Yesterday in Eden by German Jan Speckenbach started as a German contribution . The program helps young film students promote and complete their projects. The Taiwanese filmmaker Hou Hsiao-Hsien acted as president of the jury . The jury was completed by the Danish director Susanne Bier , the French actress Marina Hands , the French director Olivier Assayas and Larry Kardish, curator for film and cinema at the Museum of Modern Art .
