Kelly Reichardt

Kelly Reichardt (* 1964 in Miami , Florida ) is an American screenwriter and director who prefers to work in the American independent scene.

Life

Kelly Reichardt released her debut feature film River of Grass in 1994. It was nominated for three Independent Spirit Awards , as well as for the Grand Jury Prize of the Sundance Film Festival . After this initial success, Reichardt concentrated on realizing several short film projects for over a decade. Only with Old Joy in 2006 did she return to full-length feature films. The film is based on a short story by Jon Raymond , starring Daniel London and singer-songwriter Will Oldham . Old Joy is about two old friends who meet again after a long time and go on a camping trip at the Cascades and Hot Springs of Bagby, near Portland, Oregon. The film received awards from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association , the Rotterdam International Film Festival and the Sarasota Film Festival .

Kelly Reichardt's subsequent project, Wendy and Lucy, is also based on a short story by Jon Raymond. This time the writer Reichardt personally helped with the script for the film adaptation, which was published in December 2008 and which received widespread attention, especially because of the performance of Michelle Williams . The film was nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards, including the "Best Film" category.

Most of the director's films are characterized by a deliberately minimalist staging. For example On the Way to Oregon (2010), a western from the time of the Oregon Trail, which took part in the 2010 competition for the Golden Lion at the 67th Venice International Film Festival . Reichardt cast Michelle Williams again in one of the leading roles.

In 2019 Reichardt was appointed to the competition jury of the 72nd Cannes Film Festival .

In 2020 she received an invitation to compete at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival for the feature film First Cow (2019) .

In addition to her active career, Kelly Reichardt also teaches film at Bard College.
