Night Moves is an American film drama from the year 2013 . Kelly Reichardt directed the film and co-wrote the script with Jonathan Raymond .
action
The three environmental activists Josh, Dena and Harmon plan to blow up a dam as a symbolic action against the exploitation of nature in the US state of Oregon . The project is going perfectly according to plan: You buy a used motorboat, along with fertilizers for the production of explosives, and place the boat with 750 kg of explosives and a time fuse right on the dam in the middle of the night so as not to endanger people. The demolition succeeds and the group separates immediately as agreed.
The next day, of course, the event was in all the media, especially since one of the three completely unexpectedly went missing a camper. His body is found a few days later; he had camped on the bank downstream of the dam and was swept away by the tidal wave of the dam breach.
The certainty of having killed a person, albeit unintentionally, affects the three very differently. The hardened Harmon does not appear to have been affected and seems to have accepted that. Josh hides himself and can hardly be approached. Dena falls into a depression and, in order to relieve herself, hints at a friend - it is only a matter of time before she can no longer take it. Josh visits her for fear of her confession, the situation quickly escalating until he finally strangles her and then has to go into hiding.
The film ends openly: Josh applies to be a salesman in an outdoor store to start a new life. He seems completely disheveled.
criticism
“The US political thriller 'Night Moves' tells of three eco-activists who want to blow up a dam. It's a terrific film about the nature of political fundamentalism. "
“Like the best thrillers, Night Moves translates individual fears into larger contexts, like realism, it trains the eye for the importance of seemingly unimportant gestures and details. And like every outstanding film, it asks the really big existential questions without imposing them on the viewer. "
“'Night Moves' is a masterpiece of great intensity and seriousness, in which very emphatically not only the question of the proportionality of the means but also of the possibility of engagement in today's world is raised."
"With dramaturgical brilliance, Kelly Reichardt's 'Night Moves' stages the hubris of ecological fundamentalism."
“The detailed staging of the attack becomes the centerpiece of the film. When the determined activists make their way through a seemingly endless national park to the spherical humming chord changes of Jeff Grace, as if they were in a sleepwalking adventure film, it is of captivating intensity. "
premiere
The film premiered at the 2013 Venice International Film Festival in competition on August 31, 2013.
