Cannes International Film Festival 2019
The 72nd Cannes International Film Festival took place from May 14th to 25th, 2019. For the sixth time, they were under the direction of President Pierre Lescure , while Thierry Frémaux, as General Delegate, was responsible for the artistic direction.
The jury president of the international competition, in which the Golden Palm was awarded for the best film at the festival, was this year the Mexican filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu . The main prize was awarded to the tragic comedy Parasite by the South Korean director Bong Joon-ho . As in the previous year, the French actor Édouard Baer was selected as the moderator (“maître de cérémonie”) of the opening ceremony and the final award gala .
The official program was presented on April 18, 2019. The zombie film The Dead Don't Die by Jim Jarmusch , which is also represented in the competition for the Palme d'Or , had already been announced as the opening film . As a graduation film, the French comedy Everything Except Ordinary (Hors normes) by Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano was selected.
The winner was already the French actor Alain Delon , who was awarded the Festival Prize of Honor (Palme d'or d'Honneur) on May 19 at the festival . In the course of his career he was represented with various films at the festival ( Halt mal die Bombe, Liebling , Liebe 1962 , The Leopard - Goldene Palme 1963 , Monsieur Klein , Nouvelle Vague ), awarded the Golden Palm as laudator at the 60th edition and presented repeatedly restored works in which he played in the Cannes Classics section . There had been opposition from the US organization Women and Hollywood to Delon's honor . This accused the actor, citing earlier statements, of being “racist, homophobic and misogynistic”. An online petition against Delon's honor had reached more than 25,000 supporters. In the past, Delon had repeatedly and publicly sympathized with the right-wing National Front party , admitted violence against women and committed himself to the death penalty. Festival director Thierry Fremaux defended the decision because Delon was being honored as an artist and not for his political views. “We're not giving him the Nobel Peace Prize, ” said Fremaux about the award of the honorary prize.
Festival poster
The festival poster was inspired by a photo from 1954 showing Agnès Varda filming her debut film La Pointe Courte in the south of France. The short filmmaker, who died in March 2019, stands on the shoulders of a technician so that she can look through the film camera. Varda was considered one of the most important and independent French film directors and made it into the official selection of the Cannes Festival 13 times with her films. In 2005 she was a member of the jury, in 2013 President of the Caméra d'Or jury and in 2015 she was awarded the Festival Prize (Palme d'honneur) .

Semaine de la critique
At the same time as the Golden Palm was awarded, the Semaine de la critique (May 15 to 23, 2019) sub-section, which has existed since 1962, is dedicated to discovering new talent. Organized by the Syndicat français de la critique de cinéma , only first films or second works by young directors compete. In the past, the competition consisted of seven feature films and seven short film works, which have been awarded various prizes since 1990. The “International Critics' Week” is accompanied by special screenings of numerous short films.
In 2019, the Colombian filmmaker Ciro Guerra , a three-time participant at the Cannes Film Festival, was appointed president of the jury. The other members of the jury were the Franco-British actress Amira Casar , the Franco-Danish producer Marianne Slot , the Belgian-Congolese film journalist and critic Djia Mambu and the Italian-American filmmaker Jonas Carpignano , also a three-time participant at the Cannes Film Festival.
The schedule for the entire public program was published in early May 2019.
