Taron David Egerton (born November 10, 1989 in Birkenhead , United Kingdom ) is a British actor . He became known for his leading roles in Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014) and Eddie The Eagle (2016). In 2018 he played the title hero in the film Robin Hood . In the biopic Rocketman , he played the musician Elton John in 2019 , for which he was awarded the Golden Globe Award .

Life

Taron Egerton was born in Birkenhead in November 1989 and grew up in Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, Wales . He later moved to Aberystwyth with his mother . He attended Ysgol Penglais Comprehensive School. He then began his acting training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, which he graduated in 2012.

Egerton made his acting debut in 2013 with a small role as Liam Jay in two episodes of Lewis - The Oxford Crime . He later became the lead actor in the Sky 1 television series The Smoke , in which he played the role of Dennis "Asbo" Severs for eight episodes . He became famous in 2014 alongside Colin Firth in the action comedy Kingsman: The Secret Service in the role of Gary "Eggsy" Unwin . Also in 2014 he starred alongside Alicia Vikander and Kit Harington in the film Testament of Youth , based on the novel of the same name . For Kingsman he received an Empire Award for Best Newcomer in 2015 .

In 2015 he played the small role of Edward Smith , the psychopathic homosexual friend and lover of gangster legend Ronnie Kray in Brian Helgeland's thriller Legend . From March 2015, Egerton started shooting Eddie the Eagle - Anything Is Possible , in which he played Michael Edwards , the first ski jumper to compete for Great Britain at the 1988 Winter Olympics . Hugh Jackman can be seen at his side as Edwards' ski instructor Bronson Peary. The film premiered in January 2016 at the Sundance Film Festival .

In September 2017, Kingsman: The Golden Circle , the sequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service , started in which Egerton again played the lead role of Eggsy Unwin. The title role in Robin Hood followed in 2018 . On October 1, 2018, Paramount released the first trailer for Dexter Fletcher's biopic Rocketman , in which Egerton played pop legend Elton John . The film premiered at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival in 2019 . He was recognized for his performance at the Golden Globe Awards 2020 in the category Best Actor - Comedy / Musical .

At the end of June 2018, Egerton became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences .
