The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (Original title: The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance ) is an American fantasy television series that was included in the program of Netflix on August 30, 2019 . The first and so far only planned season comprises ten episodes. It is the prehistory of the fantasy feature film The Dark Crystal of the puppeteers and Muppets inventors Jim Henson and Frank Oz from 1982.

action

The planet Thra is ruled by the Skeksen, hideous, bird-like, giant beings who rule over the other species, including the elf-like Gelfling. The terrible secret of the Skekse: They kill Gelflinge and drink their "essence" to extend their own lives. When three of the lucky ones find out about this, they try to bring the truth to light.

Everyday life at the Skekse court is characterized by intrigue. Each of them tries to maintain power over the planet and to be able to use the dark crystal as a source of energy and life for themselves. Prisoners are tortured in their dungeon-like laboratory.

Emergence

The series tells the prehistory of the fantasy feature film The Dark Crystal by the puppeteers and Muppets inventors Jim Henson and Frank Oz from 1982. As in the film, the characters in the series are not moved with the help of computer animation, but with puppet shows When making the new dolls, the doll and costume design was based on the original. Toby Froud , whose father, Brian Froud, was the conceptual artist of the original film and is the supervisor in charge of the series' design, said, "I helped keep the style of his designs and the feel of the original film."

The creature design of the Skekse was based on that for the film template

The driving force behind the series is Louis Leterrier , who also directed individual episodes. Born in France, he had worked with Luc Besson in the past and directed the action films The Transporter and Unleashed , but also Hollywood blockbusters such as The Incredible Hulk and The Incredibles - Now You See Me .

Sigourney Weaver acts as the narrator. Puppeteers, some of whom also act as speakers, include Alice Dinnean , Beccy Henderson , Neil Sterenberg , Warrick Brownlow-Pike , Dave Chapman , Kevin Clash , Damian Farrell, and Louise Gold .

While the characters in the series are moved exclusively by this puppet show, CGI was used for landscape shots of the planet Thra, on which the series takes place like the film .

Cast and dubbing

The German synchronization was based on a dialogue book by Joachim Kunzendorf and the dialogue direction by Mike Betz on behalf of VSI Synchron GmbH, Berlin.

Reviews

The driving force behind the series: Louis Leterrier , here at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2019

At Metacritic , the first season received a Metascore of 84/100, based on 14 evaluated reviews, at Rotten Tomatoes 90 percent of the 50 reviews evaluated so far were positive.

Christian Fußy von Filmstarts explains, The Dark Crystal: Era of Resistance takes plenty of time for the plot to really pick up speed. In the first half of the ten-part season, the focus is primarily on the political, family and philosophical backgrounds of the individual main characters, which does not mean that there is no tension in these episodes. The series is not suitable for all children, however, especially when the sly biscuits are the focus of a scene, which can sometimes drift towards horror, says Fussy: "When the big, ugly creatures meet at an orgiastic feast Delecting eyes and viscera or torturing and mutilating their enemies and their kind in the dungeon, then this is partly captured in terrifyingly explicit images. "

Luise Checchin from the Süddeutsche Zeitung writes that if you can overlook the somewhat kitschy 80s aesthetic, you will find something magically analogous in the era of resistance : "The real puppets that play here in real backdrops give the whole thing a warm liveliness. A faster narrative pace and deeper characters also ensure that the series is a lot more entertaining than the original. "
