Awkwafina (ˌɔːkwəˈfiːnə), actually Nora Lum (born June 2, 1989 ), is an American rapper , presenter and actress . She received the Golden Globe Award in 2020 for the lead role in The Farewell .

Life

Nora Lum is the child of a Sino-American father and a South Korean mother. She grew up in the Forest Hills neighborhood of Queens, New York City. Her grandfather opened a Cantonese restaurant in Flushing , Queens , as a Chinese immigrant in the 1940s . Lum's mother died when she was four years old and she was raised by her grandmother.

In her school days she played classical music and jazz on the trumpet . At the age of 16 she took on the stage name Awkwafina . Lum majored in Journalism and Women's Studies from the University at Albany . From 2006 to 2008 she studied Standard Chinese at the University of Language and Culture in Beijing . She completed internships in the New York daily newspapers Gotham Gazette and Times Union . They inspired Charles Bukowski , Anaïs Nin , Joan Didion , Tom Waits and Chet Baker for their work .

At the end of June 2020, Awkwafina became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences .

Career

Lum began rapping at the age of 13. In 2012, she gained popularity with the song My Vag , which she wrote in response to Mickey Avalon's song My Dick , the corresponding YouTube video reached over 4.5 million views by August 2018. She released her first solo album, Yellow Ranger , on February 11, 2014. It contains some of her singles already released on YouTube, such as the songs Yellow Ranger , Queef and NYC Bitche $ .

She participated in the festival Supreme of Tenacious D in part on October 25, 2014. In 2016, she and Margaret Cho published the song Green Tea , which deals with stereotypes about Asian women.

In June 2018 Lum released the EP In Fina We Trust .

In 2016, Lum played a supporting role in Bad Neighbors 2 and the lead role in the indie comedy Dude . That same year, she spoke a role in the animated comedy Storks - Adventure in the run .

2017 played Lum in the film Crazy Rich of Warner Bros. the figure of the Peik Lin.

2018 she was a titular of the eight performers in Ocean's - offshoot Ocean's 8 .

In April 2018 it was announced that they part of the cast of the Sci-Fi - Thriller Paradise Hills is the feature film debut of Alice Waddington , in which Emma Roberts , Eiza González , Milla Jovovich and Danielle Macdonald play and on the 26 January 2019 premiered at the Sundance Film Festival . Another film starring Akwafina premiered just one day earlier, also in Sundance: The Farewell by Lulu Wang. In it she played the role of Billi Wang . For her performance, she was awarded a Golden Globe Award in the category Best Actress - Comedy or Musical .

TV and web series

In 2014, Lum was inducted into the cast of Girl Code 's third season .

Lum was the host of the self-produced short web series Tawk , which was honored at the Webby Awards 2016 and was nominated for the Streamy Award 2016 in the category "News and Culture".

She plays recurring roles on the Hulu series Future Man , which first aired in November 2017.

In 2015, Lum published its own travel guide to New York City, Awkwafina's NYC , at Potter Style, a subsidiary of Penguin Random House .

The website Kore Asian Media selected her as the “Female Breakout” of 2017.

engagement

Lum supports Time's Up , a Hollywood celebrity-initiated campaign against sexual harassment . She also advocates more women directors in the film industry and against the clichés about Asian women in the media. She therefore rejects roles that require her to speak with an Asian accent.
