Penguin Random House , based in New York City, is the largest group of consumer publishers in the world. It was created in 2013 through the merger of Random House and Penguin Books . The company belongs to the German media group Bertelsmann . Penguin Random House is primarily present in the English and Spanish - speaking world and is a sister company of the German publishing group Random House based in Munich . The group consists of more than 250 independent publishers operating on the market and brings more than 15,000 new publications onto the market every year.

history

In 2012 it was announced that Bertelsmann and Pearson were negotiating a merger of their publishers. The merger was officially confirmed on October 29, 2012, subject to antitrust reviews. At this point in time, Random House had sales of around 1.7 billion euros, while Penguin Books sales amounted to the equivalent of 1.3 billion euros. The merger of the two publishers was explained with the challenges of the digital distribution of books and the increased internationalization of business. Bertelsmann took over 53% of Penguin Random House , Pearson 47% of the shares in the company.

In February 2013, the United States Department of Justice approved the merger unconditionally, followed a few months later by the European Commission . She noted that Penguin Random House would continue to compete with several strong competitors. In the area of book production , too , the participating companies' market shares were rated as low. The merger came to an end on July 1, 2013, and Markus Dohle took over the management of the publishing house . Since then, Penguin Random House has all branches in the United States , Canada , Great Britain , Australia , New Zealand , India and South Africa as well as Spain and Latin America . After Bertelsmann acquired all of the shares in the Random House Mondadori joint venture in 2012 , the Spanish-language publishers will continue to operate as the Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial after the merger . In 2019, Penguin Random House achieved sales of around 6.7 billion euros.

In July 2017, Bertelsmann announced that it would take over 22% of the shares held by Pearson, so that Bertelsmann now holds 75% and Pearson 25%. In December 2019, Bertelsmann announced that in the second quarter of 2020 they also wanted to take over the shares that were still held by Pearson.

criticism

After the merger, there were voices critical of the fact that Random House now controls a quarter of global book production. For authors, this could lead to deterioration, among other things, if the publishers of the group would no longer compete for book rights.
