action

Rachel Chu, a New York University (NYU) economics professor , is dating Nick Young, also a professor at New York University. One day she accepts his invitation to join him for the wedding of his best friend Colin in Nick's native Singapore. Nick is said to be the best man, while Rachel will meet Nick's family for the first time and see her old school friend Peik Lin. On the flight to Singapore, Rachel slowly realizes that Nick's family must be very rich and is accordingly unsettled. When she mentions her boyfriend's name to Peik Lin, she confirms this again in clear words.

Nick's mother, Eleanor, learns of the relationship through internet gossip and makes inquiries about Rachel that she doesn't like, of course. Nick's ex-girlfriend is also trying with all her might to torpedo a possible wedding of Rachel and Nick. But Nick continues to stick with her. When Nick's family confronts Rachel with the fact that their information about their origin is incorrect, she wants to flee Singapore. Rachel hadn't deliberately lied to Nick and his family about their family background; rather, it was her mother who, out of fear, did not want to burden her with the truth about her violent father from birth.

There is a final meeting of Rachel and Nick's mother, in which Rachel can convince them that even less wealthy people can have a lot on the box. The two women play the game of mah- jongg with two extra women , in which Nick's mother apparently claims the last word for herself together with the victory move. But Rachel counters by uncovering the highest possible leaf again - this symbolic scene is carried over to the next, where Rachel arrives at Changi Airport for the return flight to the States. On the plane, Nick introduces her and proposes to her.
