Vanja Černjul
Vanja Černjul (born June 3, 1968 in Zagreb , Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia ) is a Croatian cameraman .
Career
Černjul was already interested in photography at school and was in a circle of friends around today's Reuters photographer Saša Kavić, the artist Simon Bogojević Narath and the directors Goran Rušinović and Ivan Miladinov, who, according to his own statement, promoted him creatively. With Saša Kavić and another friend from school, Tihomir Tunuković, he studied camera at the Akademija dramske umjetnosti u Zagrebu , the art academy of the University of Zagreb, from 1987 to 1991 . Shortly before the end of his studies and the beginning of the Croatian War, Tunuković died in 1991. In his honor, the film production company Tuna Film was founded, which is still run by his brother Davor Tunuković.
While attending a seminar at the Academy of Drama and Film in Budapest , he met the Oscar- winning cinematographer Haskell Wexler . With his letter of recommendation he was allowed to attend the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University from 1995 to 1997, where he completed his MFA degree, the Master of Fine Arts . There he benefited from the fact that many students wanted to become directors and that he was a cameraman for almost two dozen short films during his student days. These included films that later received a number of awards, such as Fishbelly White by Michael Burke, which was awarded for best short film at the Sundance Film Festival , or Bleach by Bill Platt, which received the student Oscar for best film. His first film after graduation was I'll Take You There by Adrienne Shelly .
He was staying with Richard Shepard for the shoot of Hunting Party in Croatia when he received a call from NBC producers who were dissatisfied with the look of 30 Rock and who hired him. He then flew to New York and took over the camera work in the ninth episode. Not only the producers as well as Tina Fey were satisfied with his work. That's why he got both the offer for the second season and an Emmy nomination for best camera in a half-hour series in 2008 .
In the following years he worked for both Bored to Death and Nurse Jackie as a cameraman. For his work on Nurse Jackie , he received another Emmy nomination for best camera in a half-hour series . His last feature film was City Island by Raymond De Felitta, starring Andy García and Emily Mortimer , which was released in 2009.
In 2004 Černjul published the book Subjektivni kadrovi , which contains various conversations with the Croatian cameraman Tomislav Pinter , who died in 2008 .
Life
Černjul has been married to his wife Nives since 1995 and has had a son with her since 2002. He lives with her in Nolita , a neighborhood in Manhattan , New York City . There he lives with compatriots like the director and actor Goran Dukić , Igor Martinović and the photographer Davor Šuvak in the neighborhood. When asked if he would ever return to Zagreb, he replied that he visits Zagreb twice a year, so that he feels like he has never really been away (U Zagrebu sam barem dva puta godišnje, stoga nemam osjećaj da sam ga ikada sasvim napustio.) .
