Daniel Joseph "Dan" Benishek (* 20th April 1952 in Iron River , Iron County , Michigan ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . Between 2011 and 2017 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Dan Benishek attended West Iron County High School through 1970 . He then studied medicine and biology at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor until 1978 . In the following years he worked as a medic.

Politically, Benishek joined the Republican Party. In the 2010 congressional elections , he was elected as their candidate in the first constituency of Michigan in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Bart Stupak on January 3, 2011 . He had prevailed in the primary of his party with an extremely narrow lead over State Senator Jason Allen and then won the actual election against the Democrat Gary McDowell . This election result was in the federal trend in favor of the Republican Party. He was re-elected in 2012 and 2014. In 2016 he decided not to run again. At the end of the legislative period on January 3, 2017, his membership in Congress ended. Benishek was a member of the Mineral Resources Committee and the Veterans Committee . He was considered to be rather conservative and essentially represented the positions of his party.

Dan Benishek has five children with his wife Judith and lives privately in Iron County.
