Samuel M. Stephenson

Samuel Merritt Stephenson (born December 23, 1831 in Hartland , New Brunswick , †  July 31, 1907 in Menominee , Michigan ) was an American politician of Canadian origin. Between 1889 and 1897 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Samuel Stephenson was the younger brother of Isaac Stephenson (1829-1918), who sat for the State of Wisconsin in both houses of Congress . In his youth he came to the United States with his parents, where the family initially settled in Maine . In 1846, they moved to Michigan’s Delta County . Stephenson worked there in the wood industry. From 1858 he lived in Menominee, where, in addition to the wood business, he was also active in the real estate market, in trade and in agriculture. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . For several years he served as a district administrator in Menominee County . From 1877 to 1878 he was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives ; between 1879 and 1886 he was a member of the State Senate several times . In 1884 and 1888, Stephenson was a delegate to the respective Republican National Conventions .

In the congressional election of 1888 , he was elected to the Eleventh constituency of Michigan in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Henry W. Seymour on March 4, 1889 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1897 . Since 1893 he represented the then newly created twelfth district of his state there. After leaving the US House of Representatives, Samuel Stephenson returned to the timber industry. He died in Menominee on July 31, 1907.
