John Dingell Sr.
John David Dingell Sr. (born February 2, 1894 in Detroit , Michigan , † September 19, 1955 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1933 and 1955 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .
Career
John Dingell was born as John Dzieglewicz. He later changed his last name to Dingell for tactical reasons. In his youth he worked as a news crier, printer and newspaper deliverer. He was also involved in the construction of gas pipelines and became a wholesaler of beef and pork. He later worked for a newspaper printer in Detroit. Because of an illness of asthma and tuberculosis , he spent some recreational time in Colorado in the 1920s .
Politically, Dingell was a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional elections of 1932 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the then newly created 15th constituency of Michigan, where he took up his new mandate on March 4, 1933. After seven re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on September 19, 1955 . It was there that the Federal Government's New Deal laws were first passed under President Franklin D. Roosevelt . Since December 7, 1941, the day of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor , the work of Congress has also been shaped by the events of World War II . After that, Dingell saw the beginning of the Cold War and the Korean War and the beginning of the civil rights movement in Congress . The 21st amendment was passed in 1933 and the 22nd amendment in 1951 .
John Dingell was married to Grace Bigler Dingell, with whom he had three children. Among them was the son John , born in 1926 , who, after a by-election, was able to take over his father's mandate in Congress. The younger Dingell was then a member of Congress until 2015.
