Wilder D. Foster

Wilder De Ayr Foster (born January 8, 1819 in Orange County , New York , †  September 20, 1873 in Grand Rapids , Michigan ) was an American politician . Between 1871 and 1873 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Wilder Foster attended the public schools of his home country and came to Michigan in 1837, where he worked in the hardware store in Grand Rapids from 1845 . In his new home Foster began a political career as a member of the Republican Party founded in 1854 . In Grand Rapids he was a treasurer, a member of the city council and, finally, mayor. Foster was a member of the Michigan Senate in 1855 and 1856 . From 1865 to 1866 he was again mayor of Grand Rapids.

After the resignation of Congressman Thomas W. Ferry , who moved to the US Senate , Foster was elected in the due by-election for the fourth seat of Michigan as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he was on December 4th 1871 took up his new mandate. In the regular congressional election of 1872 Foster was re-elected to the US House of Representatives in the fifth constituency of Michigan, where he replaced Omar D. Conger on March 4, 1873 . Foster could not end his legislative period, which actually ran until March 3, 1875, because he died on September 20, 1873. After another by-election, his mandate fell to William B. Williams .
