Martha Griffiths
Martha Wright Griffiths (born January 29, 1912 as Martha Edna Wright in Pierce City , Lawrence County , Missouri , † April 22, 2003 in Amarda , Michigan ) was an American politician and lieutenant governor of the state of Michigan from 1983 to 1991 .
She studied at the University of Missouri , where she received her BA in 1934 . She then attended the University of Michigan Law School , graduated in 1940, and after she was admitted to the bar in 1941, practiced as a lawyer. From 1948 to 1952 she was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives .
After Griffiths ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US House of Representatives in 1952 , she was elected two years later and represented the state of Michigan as a Democrat after multiple re-elections from January 3, 1955 to December 31, 1974. In 1982, Griffiths was elected lieutenant governor of Michigan; she was able to successfully defend this office in the next elections in 1986. Griffiths remained Lieutenant Governor until 1991.
