The Gronovioideae are a subfamily of the flower nettle family (Loasaceae).
description
The upper leaves are always alternate, only the primary leaves are opposite. They are covered with stinging trichomes , and nettle hairs are occasionally found. The inflorescences are terminal thyrsenic with a terminal dichasium and one or two additional paracladia . Each of the upright, five-fold flowers has two thread-like bracts . The sepals are permanent and enlarge during the ripening period, the petals are ingrown, spatulate, not nailed, thin-skinned and even with a central rib extending from the base . The androeceum consists of only one circle, staminodes are missing. The stamens are thread-like, the anthers open towards the center of the flower.
The ovary is inferior and carries a hanging ovule . The fruit is an achenes with a pentagonal cross-section and winged ribs; it lacks bracts and bracts . The outer skin of the seeds is white to beige.
distribution
The subfamily is neotropical , its distribution area extends from northwestern Peru ( Gronovia ) to the southwest of the USA and to Hispaniola .
