Albert Joseph Engel (born January 1, 1888 in New Washington , Crawford County , Ohio , †  December 2, 1959 in Grand Rapids , Michigan ) was an American politician . Between 1935 and 1951 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Albert Engel attended the public schools in Grand Traverse County in Michigan and the Central YMCA College in Chicago . After a subsequent law degree at Northwestern University in Evanston ( Illinois ) and his admission to the bar in 1910, he began to work in Lake City in his new profession. Between 1916 and 1920 he was a district attorney in Missaukee County . This activity was interrupted by the First World War, in which Engel participated in 1917 and 1918. First he was a lieutenant in the War Ministry and then a captain in the front line.

Politically, Engel was a member of the Republican Party . He served in the Michigan Senate from 1921 to 1922 and from 1927 to 1932 . In the 1934 congressional elections , he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of Michigan , where he succeeded Democrat Harry W. Musselwhite on January 3, 1935 . After seven re-elections, he was able to complete eight legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1951 . There, further New Deal laws were passed by the federal government by 1941 , but Engels' party was rather hostile to them. Since 1941, the work of the Congress was also shaped by the events of World War II . Afterwards, Engel experienced the beginning of the Cold War as a congressman .

In 1950, Engel renounced another congressional candidacy. Instead, he unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination as the top candidate for the upcoming Michigan gubernatorial election . He then managed his 5.7 km² tree plantation near Lake City. Albert Engel died on December 2, 1959 in Lake City, where he was also buried.
