Roswell G. Horr

Roswell Gilbert Horr (born November 26, 1830 in Waitsfield , Washington County , Vermont , †  December 19, 1896 in Plainfield , New Jersey ) was an American politician . Between 1879 and 1885 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1834, Roswell Horr moved with his parents to Lorain County , Ohio , where he attended public schools. He then studied until 1857 at Antioch College in Yellow Springs . Between 1857 and 1862 he was an administrative clerk in the Lorain County Court. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1862, he began to work in his new profession in Elyria . In 1866 he moved to southeast Missouri , where he worked in the mining industry for six years. In 1872 he settled in East Saginaw (Michigan) and began a political career there as a member of the Republican Party .

In the congressional election of 1878 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of Michigan , where he succeeded Charles C. Ellsworth on March 4, 1879 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1885 . In June 1884 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago , where James G. Blaine was nominated as a presidential candidate. In the years 1884 and 1886 Horr was defeated in the elections to the Democrat Timothy E. Tarsney .

In 1890 Roswell Horr moved to New York City , where he was part of the editorial team of the New York Tribune until his death . He died in Plainfield on December 19, 1896 and was buried in Wellington, Ohio.
