Dennis Mark Hertel (born December 7, 1948 in Detroit , Michigan ) is an American politician . Between 1981 and 1993 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Dennis Hertel attended public schools in his home country, including Denby High School until 1967 . He then studied at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti until 1971 . After completing a law degree at Wayne State University and being admitted to the bar in 1975, he began working in his new profession in Detroit. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

Hertel was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives from 1975 to 1980 . In the 1980 congressional elections , he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 14th constituency of Michigan , where he succeeded Lucien N. Nedzi on January 3, 1981 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1993 . In 1992 Hertel decided not to run again. He then practiced as a lawyer in a large joint law firm. In 2010 worked as a consultant to the Livingston Group , a lobbyists' association, in the federal capital Washington.
